mysticalamber, vampire stories in history have come from both mortal and immortal. I suspect the immortals broke down mentalty and became obsessed with slaying the innocent. Blood may have also proved benefitial in some way. Either way, vampieres were a common part of old superstition. In some areas they still do perform various rituals on dead bodies, believing they will come back to life. In dark times of plague people came up with many stories to explain the horror in their lives. It's funny though, because logic has it that more immortals would have transformed during plague times due to the pure stress on their body, rampant sickness, and emotional pain of those times.

Pure will can't start a transformation. You are either born of it, or it happens through an extreme situation. From all relevant data, I believe Dracula (known as many names) to have transformed, but possibly not into immortality. His ability for war, revenge, and blood thirst (not neccessarily meaning blood drinking) were extraordinary. The myths and vampire subculture, especially modern, were exagerated.

Most transformations are through mental or physical pain. Ones of pure "englightenment" and realization are extremely rare. I mean to say, all immortality is extremely rare, but that is especially rare.

As for birth immortality, I have not heard of such a thing for a very very long time. I'm not sure this even possible anymore.
