WAS aboard US Navy ship the Norton Sound in 1946, that went to Thule Greenland to build airfield there AND had 4-5 scientists aboard the had instruments to measure the radiation from same, on our upper boat deck. Place was roped off, as we were not to get to close to the instruments.

I went there with a friend to box, and not be observed by other crew. Our seaplanes mapped all of Greenland, and CBs built an airfield; set up Quonset huts for crews.

We had NO COMMUNICATION with the rest of the world for 11 days, due to the sunspots; it was that bad ! Obviously affected the ionesphere AND compasses, as a mail plane flying up from Goose Bay Labrador got lost. We sent out a plane that tracked it's signal, and miraculously spotted the plane circling through a hole in the clouds and led it back to our ship. Problem was, they through out 11 sacks of mail to lighten the plane, and ran out of gas while landing. No ONE spoke to the crew of that plane while they were there.

here are 2 updated images of this large sunspot region

cant say for 100% sure just yet, because we need a bit better of a view (that we will have later today)
but as it is right now with what we Can see...
it is not 2 sunspots
it is one
with a leading spot, and a trailing spot


we can see here that it is one sunspot with only a small viewable seperation between the leading spot and the trailing spot

Let's not discount the fact that the carrington event was actually two storms..
The one preceding plowed the way for the second, making it much more damaging in effect.

Timing and geo-effectiveness are everything.
