BREAKING - Boeing Dreamliner Makes Emergency Lanzing
Boeing 787 makes emergency landing in Japan

January 16th 2012

A Boeing 787 operated by All Nippon Airways made an emergency landing in Takamatsu in western Japan, but all 137 passengers and crew members were evacuated safely, the Osaka airport said on Wednesday.

The airline said that a battery problem forced the landing. "During the flight, [the pilots] had an error message saying 'battery problem,'" said an airline spokesman. "We are still investigating what exactly happened."

Local media said the pilots noticed smoke in the cockpit, but the airline would not comment on those reports.

The airline said it will continue flying Dreamliners for now, despite the incident

I work in materials science research and have over 20 years experience. They are pushing these composite materials too far in the name of fuel efficiency. Not enough safety factor. I fly often but will NOT get on a largely composite plane like a dream liner or A380. I predict it's only a matter of time before one suffers a catastrophic failure and falls from the sky. The FAA won't intervene, too much money at stake.

I'm pretty sure that F-117 that flew apart in the late 90's was due to a failure of a composite part (when maintenance left out 4 of 16 bolts). Just imagine what happens in the civilian maintenance world and one too many bolts isn't replaced or incorrectly torqued.

Re: BREAKING - Boeing Dreamliner Makes Emergency Lanzing
An Embraer went down in Texas with all lives lost in the 80s because maintenance didn't replace the leading edge bolts on the stabilizer.

The Dehaviland Comet, the first commercial jet, was a death trap. They lost 3 mid flight before they admitted there was a problem. The planes built in the 80s were the sturdiest. Now we've come full circle and we're back to walking a fine line between safety and efficiency. Of course the official line is that planes are safer than ever. I don't buy it.
