Top Japan airlines ground Boeing 787s after emergency

[link to www.bbc.co.uk]

Japan's two main airlines have grounded their Boeing 787 Dreamliners after one was forced to make an emergency landing because of battery problems.

In recent weeks, Dreamliners have suffered issues including fuel leaks, a cracked cockpit window, brake problems and an electrical fire.

insight: gm's volt - the ugly math of low sales, high costs

[link to webcache.googleusercontent.com]

Nearly two years after the introduction of the path-breaking plug-in hybrid, GM is still losing as much as $49,000 on each Volt it builds, according to estimates provided to Reuters by industry analysts and manufacturing experts.

Cheap Volt lease offers meant to drive more customers to Chevy showrooms this summer may have pushed that loss even higher. There are some Americans paying just $5,050 to drive around for two years in a vehicle that cost as much as $89,000 to produce.

"I don't see how General Motors will ever get its money back on that vehicle," countered Sandy Munro, president of Michigan-based Munro & Associates, which performs detailed tear-down analyses of vehicles and components for global manufacturers and the U.S. government.

Another fire during Chevy Volt crash test sparks safety investigation

New fires involving the lithium-ion batteries in General Motors Co.'s Chevrolet Volt have prompted an investigation to assess the risk of fire in the electric car after a serious crash, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said Friday.

One Volt battery pack that was being closely monitored following a government crash test caught fire Thursday, the safety administration said in a statement. Another recently crash-tested battery emitted smoke and sparks, the statement said.

Another Fisker Karma Goes Up in Flames

[link to www.wired.com]

A fire has claimed another privately owned Fisker Karma, the second such incident in just over three months.

The fire is the second such incident to take place this year, with another Fisker engulfing an owner’s garage in Sugar Land, Texas, this past May. The cause of that fire is still under investigation, and comes less than two months after the automaker and its battery partner — A123 Systems — recalled over 600 Karmas due to a possible battery defect.

Plenty of solid good used older cars. These new car prices are asinine and leasing is idiotic. Even car salemen tell me it's idiotic.

Boeing Receives Tax Rebates; Pays No Income Taxes for 3 Years

[link to politics.gather.com]

Boeing is a large employer in the Pacific Northwest making planes. It has done well in the past three years earning $10 billion in domestic pre-tax profits between 2008 and 2010. And this, it is said by Republicans, is a good thing for America because a successful business pays taxes into the coffers of the U.S. government.

Only one problem; the U.S. government paid Boeing "a rebate of $75 million."

Incidentally, a 2008 General Accounting Office report found that the airline and arms maker "had 38 subsidiaries in foreign tax havens."

Update: Fisker Karma Electric Car Gets Worse Mileage Than an SUV

[link to www.forbes.com]

The Fisker Karma electric car, developed mainly with your tax money so that a bunch of rich VC’s wouldn’t have to risk any real money, has rolled out with an nominal EPA MPGe of 52 in all electric mode.

....In the case of the Fisker Karma, we get a true MPGe of 19. This makes it worse than even the city rating of a Ford Explorer SUV.

Congrats to the Fisker Karma, which now joins corn ethanol in the ranks of heavily subsidized supposedly green technologies that are actually worse for the environment than current solutions.
