The new TSA scanners will use electromagnet radiation

I was watching a show that was about selling a certain house. There were 3 potential buyers. The house was beautiful. One set of buyers looked at it with all the telephone poles and wires near it, here were a lot of them (they were doctors) and everyone loved the house but the doctors said "we don't want to get brain cancer, no thanks".

What is wrong with the new scanners that are coming in?

Same song different verse, I don't know if it is worse.

What ideas do you have about this? I am still going for the pat down if it is still and option myself.

The new image is a rudimentary, genderneutral figure with mitten hands, a halo of hair, and no nose — a marked contrast to the photo-negative-like pictures that are so explicit they are viewed in private rooms by TSA officers.

Twenty-seven new machines that use electromagnetic waves instead of X-rays will replace all 17 of the older scanners, which have been used at Logan since 2010.

It is not just about getting rid of the pornographic pictures but about what the electromagnetic energy will do....over time.

It is very confusing. The new ones will protect our privacy but will they protect our health?

Known as Automated Target Recognition (ATR), the software will be installed in the coming months on millimeter-wave scanners, which use electromagnetic waves to produce an image of the body. Of the 488 full-body scanners in airports nationwide, 241 are millimeter-wave and 247 are backscatter, which use low-level radiation beams to create an image of the body.

“This software upgrade enables us to continue providing a high level of security through advanced imaging technology screening, while improving the passenger experience at checkpoints,” TSA Administrator John Pistole said in a statement issued by the agency.

Re: The new TSA scanners will use electromagnet radiation
Recently, I was in an airport and the checkin guy was really helpful and said outloud this is your gate, so without looking I went there, went through security and realized the "mistake".

So I went out and to the other side of the airport and went through security and the TSA guy acted strangely. As I was mindlessly visiting with him he put my drivers license under the scope and then he held it way up high to look at it and then he put it straight out in front of him next to me and waited and I chatted with him mindlessly, finally he cleared me. I had just been through security and quickly on the other side of the airport.

So I took my ticket and walked on, just made the plane.

Note to self: look at the ticket don't listen to the helpful check in guy.

Re: The new TSA scanners will use electromagnet radiation
Can you think of ANYTHING that TSA has done, bought, implemented, or been involved in that has NOT been harmful in one way or another to the traveling public?

As government agencies go, it seems to me that TSA is a bit more "evil" in their intentions than most of the others. Perhaps we perceive this because so many of us have had and continue to have contact with their morons working at their airports across the USA. All of their agents are generally low IQ - envious/jealous of everyone who can and does afford to fly when they cannot, and barely conceal their incredible contempt for the citizens of this nation as they travel! Why?

It has to be their training and selection of a particular 'candidate agent profile or type' that defines who/what they hire and/or do not hire. When those bastards are not being openly malicious and hate-filled, envious, and mean-spirited, they otherwise appear to be half-way drugged or devoid of normal human emotion. What causes this? Ever look at the eyes of these "agents?" They do not look alive. None of them seem overly bright, either. It's as though the hiring cutoff point is an IQ of about 85 or 90. Anything higher than that doesn't get hired! Or so it seems. Your experience may be different than mine has been - but I used to fly a LOT and I now hate getting on a plane because of those TSA idiots. Notice that United doesn't dare talk about their "Friendly Skies" any longer. The reason is obvious - the skies over America are now passenger hostile!!

I guess it will depend on the dose you get from being scanned.

They sound like a better option but who's going to pay for all the new scanners? I'm sure they ain't cheap.

This article is informative- especially when you read the comments.

LIHU‘E — Mysterious emissions caused the Lihu‘e Airport to shut down for a few hours Thursday evening and sent several Transportation Security Administration staff to Wilcox Memorial Hospital emergency room.

“Some sort of fumes affected 11 TSA personnel,” said Friday Dan Meisenzahl, spokesman for the state Department of Transportation, adding that the cause of the incident is yet to be determined.

But at least one person who was working at the airport Thursday suspects the culprit was a radiation leak in one of the TSA screening booths.

“I was there all day, I can guarantee you there was no smell,” said an airport worker who asked not to be identified for fear of being terminated.

The worker said all TSA personnel who felt ill were working next to a TSA screening booth. He took several pictures of a hazardous materials response team examining the same booth with equipment that he was told was to measure radiation levels.

“It started around 2 p.m., when two girls were sent home,” said the worker, adding that the women were standing next to the same machine the HAZMAT team had allegedly tested for radiation.

After that, a domino effect ensued, he said, resulting in 11 workers being treated for sickness.

The worker was concerned that he, his co-workers and the thousands of passengers who went through the same booth Thursday could have been exposed to unsafe radiation levels.

Meisenzahl said Friday he had no idea about radiation testing.

On Thursday, Meisenzahl stated in a press release that the TSA workers at the main checkpoint experienced dizziness, nausea, headache, throwing up and a chemical taste in their mouths.

“The HAZMAT team of the Kaua‘i County Fire Department performed an extensive investigation and could not locate the cause,” he said Friday.

County spokeswoman Mary Daubert said the HAZMAT crew tested the center checkpoint for toxic and hazardous odors and substances and found none, and found no radiation.

Meisenzahl said all TSA personnel who got sick were treated at the scene by paramedics, who determined they were fine.

As a precaution, he said, TSA management urged all workers who got sick to go to the hospital for further tests.

“All but one agreed,” Meisenzahl said. “The doctors at the hospital also determined that they were all fine.”

He said on Friday that all machines were tested and are working properly. But concerning the workers, the only thing TSA was telling him was that the operations were back to normal. “So I assume that means all workers are back to their normal shift.”

Daubert said that after HAZMAT tested the area, it was deemed safe for workers and travelers to use.

Nothing similar has happened at any of Hawai‘i’s 15 airports, according to Meisenzahl. He had no information on the status of Mainland airports.

TSA spokesman Nico Mendez said the employees have been given a clean bill of health and TSA will continue to work with local officials to determine the cause of the incident.

“The health and welfare of our officers is paramount to the success of our agency and security of the airport,” he said.

The worker who spoke with The Garden Island said TSA staff always tells travelers to put down their cameras, prohibiting them from taking pictures at the airport.

“It makes you wonder what kind of stuff is going on there,” he said.

Meisenzahl said travelers are allowed to take pictures at the airport, but not of TSA equipment and checkpoints, per TSA policy.

Re: The new TSA scanners will use electromagnet radiation
Snip; As we reported here on September 3, 2012, the TSA last year started quietly removing the radiation-emitting backscatter (x-ray) scanners from airports and replacing them with millimeter wave scanners.

This news was kept quiet, of course, only until the press found out about it. Even then, media reports often got the story wrong, implying, or stating outright as this Bloomberg story does, that all “naked-image scanners” are being removed, which is not true. Scanners will still be used at airports, only they will be millimeter wave scanners (also untested), with a generic outline of the body, not backscatter scanners.

Furthermore, speaking from someone who thought EMF stuff was a bunch of total BS, when an electrical smart meter was installed at my home I got sick. I had know idea what was going on and probably never would have figured it out if I hadn't had the crazy nose bleeds that I had never had in my life. EMF poisoning mimics high altitude sickness. You eventually go into adrenal fatigue, then cancer takes over.

One thing led to another and I ran into this scanner van article, most are being used for defense purposes, they cost 850,000 a piece.

[link to www.forbes.com]

Good news, perhaps, for shareholders--and a nightmare for privacy advocates. "It's no surprise that governments and vendors are very enthusiastic about [the vans]," says Marc Rotenberg, executive director of Electronic Privacy Information Center (Epic). "But from a privacy perspective it's one of the most intrusive technologies conceivable."

Rotenberg sees the ZBVs as mobile versions of the same full-body scanning technique that has tested Americans' tolerance for intrusion as it's been deployed in airports around the country.

This article says that they are used to detect bombs in cars and trucks. If there are people in the trucks and cars then they would be scanned to right?

Re: The new TSA scanners will use electromagnet radiation
The last time I was going through security I opted-out or in my words I say (I'll take the pat down) and a nice TSA lady turned to me and said "it's not radiation you know".

I still went for the pat down.
