TV: New roadway being built to access giant sinkhole — ‘Containment berm’ around hole?

A berm???
How the heck is a berm supposed to stop the sloughing of the hole? It might hold back the water, but that, in itself, might not be such a good idea. More water, more weight on the cavern.
