I don't know about free masons, but over the course of a few years in the US I saw several different people do 6 months or less jail time for murder. They had a higher social status than the deceased in each case so I guess they were the "prized individual to keep out of prison that shouldn't have to suffer just because some deadbeat is dead" or something.
