I think there is a distinct difference between astral projection and remote viewing. Remote viewing is basically a fancy term for clairvoyance. A target is given and a person observes pictures they are seeing in their mind. Astral projection is physically leaving you body in an astral (or whatever you want to call it) form.

An example of a real event I observed is:

I was reading in my second floor apartment and began to doze off. I closed my eyes and instantly my field of vision shifts to street Level looking at the stairs leading to my apartment. I see two friends getting out of a car and beginning to walk up the stairs. Seconds later I am brought back to my body with a loud knock on my door...of course it is those same two friends there.

I've had some success doing it on command after 5 or 6 minutes of specific meditation (heard the technique on coast to coast) but I can't control where I go, and I don't recognize where I am. Each time I am shocked / frightened at that moment and quickly return to my body in a matter of seconds.

The technique:

You can do this sitting or laying down. Best with eyes closed.

Start by slowly and lightly running your fingers of one hand on your other hand back and forth from fingertips to lower wrist. Concentrate on the sensation. Stop doing this and envision a baseball sized blue ball of light / energy hovering over your open hand, then envision the ball moving back and forth as you were doing with your fingers to start, back and forth from fingertips to wrist. Concentrate on the way it felt and feel the energy ball producing the same sensation. Once you have achieved this, let the ball slowly start to move further up your arm with each circuit it makes, reaching the elbow, the bicep, the shoulder. Let the ball begin to move across your upper body and slowly start moving down your other arm, always making slow back and forth circuits to the new point and back to the fingertips on the original hand. Eventually, once you have reached the fingertips of your other hand, allow the ball to move in a circuitous way, from fingertips, up arm, across upper body, down other arm, to other hands fingertips, then across space to original fingertips.

The most important thing is to actually feel the energy ball moving across your skin. After you've got it doing full circular circuits (should be done very slowly, about 4-5 minutes from the time you begin) you can start making the ball larger, you can have it pass through you at times, you can expand the circuit to include your legs and feet, and so on.

I jump out of body pretty consistently if I do this right - and am in the right state of mind. It helps to do a traditional relaxing meditation technique for awhile before you start this in order to relax your mind.

Problem is, as I said, that when I have these meditation induced OBEs the jump is very jarring and I almost immediately shock myself back before I have more then a couple seconds to look around. Again, no control over where I'm going. I'm trying to force myself to not jump back and to try to move around but it's difficult.
