EARTH-DIRECTED ERUPTION:
The bulk of the cloud looks like it will sail north of Earth. Nevertheless, a glancing blow is possible as shown in this 3D model of the CME prepared by analysts at the Goddard Space Flight Center. High-latitude sky watchers should be alert for auroras on Feb. 12th when the CME passes by. Solar flare alerts: text, voice.

Earth-directed CMEs can cause a space weather phenomenon called a geomagnetic storm, which occurs when they connect with the outside of the Earth's magnetic envelope, the magnetosphere, for an extended period of time. In the past, CMEs at this strength have had little effect. They may cause auroras near the poles but are unlikely to disrupt electrical systems on Earth or interfere with GPS or satellite-based communications systems.

So one of these in a day or 2 would mean we could be looking at a CME that may effect the asteroid 2012-da14's path

NASA is predicting that the coming solar maximum could produce very energetic solar flares and coronal mass ejecta. These events have the potential to cause significant damage to our power grid as well as our orbiting satellites. But how do we know what to expect?

Re: EARTH-DIRECTED ERUPTION:
So what's going on with the sun now? I also have a question for you.

According to what I've read, the government says they would only have about 15 minutes notice if a major solar eruption were to occur. I have read on GLP that the effects can happen in a span of days or take a day or two to impact earth. Why the gap? Why does the gov say 15 minutes and most here don't?
