Children of the Atom User ID: 20257839 United States 02/10/2013 04:50 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Apophis Quoting: Dr. Acula Apophis 99942 is a near-Earth asteroid that caused a brief period of concern in December 2004 because initial observations indicated a probability of up to 2.7% that it would strike the Earth in 2029. Quoting: [link to en.wikipedia.org] Additional observations provided improved predictions that eliminated the possibility of an impact on Earth or the Moon in 2029. However, a possibility remained that during the 2029 close encounter with Earth, Apophis would pass through a gravitational keyhole, a small region no more than about 800 m (half a mile) wide, that would set up a future impact on April 13, 2036. The diameter of Apophis is approximately 325 metres (1,066 ft). As of the December 29, 2012 observation arc, the probability of an April 13, 2036 impact is considered to be 1 in 11,000,000. Alright if you dont like wikipedia... go find information elsewhere and post it here instead of bitching. The link below shows you a little graph... you can clearly see that Apophis is bigger than DA14 and almost comes as close to earth as DA14 does... [link to www.space.com] btw... this song's main focus is Apophis Lyrics from the song above... April 2-0-2-9 the final time Quoting: Type O Negative - "Profit of Doom"The end my friend in not near the hour in fact is quite here It's a Friday the 13th of course you won't live to see noon The band had a really great sense of humor, so im sure its nothing... other than for a few laughs... notice the spelling of 'Profit' Still... the concern over Apophis has been very real... Even though it technically has a small chance of hitting... So while you are freaking out about DAmn14 Don't forget the long term doom of Apophis... I know this is the one I've been concerned with for a few years... Its actually the only one I've ever been concerned with... Dr.Acula... now - you know I respect you and all - but these are two - totally separate events that are apples to oranges my brother. 2012 DA14 would be like a small nuclear bomb going off... Apophis? That's an extinction level event - 2012 DA14 is nothing compared to that... But, that doesn't mean that there is no an immediate possible threat, whether from the asteroid itself OR a possible false flag. Last Edited by Children of the Atom on 02/10/2013 04:50 PM |

DA14 is a small event... (false flag aside...) Apophis is much much more of an threat. If it hits... we're all fucked... IF DA14 hits... just 1% to 5% of us are fucked. So the old saying "Don't sweat the small stuff..." Applies here _______________________ |

Damn, that's a long ways off for some doom!!! I like long term doom better... It has a longer shelf life before it expires... it gives you something to wake up and scream in fear over and over and over... as opposed to something that quickly pops up and goes away just as fast as it came. _______________________ |

Im sure it will pass us by laughing hollering "Suckas" But its certainly the asteroid event worthy of mention it almost certainly will first time round. 2036 though.... half a mile wide. that is a heavy rock, travelling VERY fast. how the FUCK can we stop it? I say land a rocket booster on it on one of it's close passes to us and give it a little nudge out of the way. we have plenty of time. that CAN be done I reckon. |

Quoting: tayto Im looking out for lemmon & ison definitely year of the comet Apophis had 3 discoverers Roy A. Tucker 1 discovery David J. Tholen 51 discoveries Fabrizio Bernardi 6? discoveries When first discovered, the object received the provisional designation 2004 MN4, and news and scientific articles about it referred to it by that name. When its orbit was sufficiently well calculated, it received the permanent number 99942 (on June 24, 2005). Receiving a permanent number made it eligible for naming, and it received the name "Apophis" on July 19, 2005.[17] Apophis is the Greek name of an enemy of the Ancient Egyptian sun-god Ra: Apep, the Uncreator, an evil serpent that dwells in the eternal darkness of the Duat and tries to swallow Ra during his nightly passage. Apep is held at bay by Set, the Ancient Egyptian god of storms and the desert. David J. Tholen and Tucker—two of the co-discoverers of the asteroid—are reportedly fans of the TV series Stargate SG-1. One of the show's persistent villains is an alien named Apophis who, on the show, gave rise to the myth of the Egyptian god. |

Doom is like a drug, people need a regular fix of imminent demise, as long as they don't actually get doom (then it's complaining about lack of emergency services support and power). DA14 is what scientists and NASA call "useful" since the more info they can get on a close pass, the better they can calculate and model real threats later. Not to mention how we might capture and mine these things in future. We should be watching the results after the flyby (if they get released). |
