Early quarantine best way to avert Sars-like outbreak: health chief
Swift isolation of suspected cases is at the core of the government's strategy to prevent another epidemic, the health minister says..

..."This is a lesson we learned from Sars," said Ko, who was at the forefront of the battle as the Hospital Authority's acting chief executive at the time. "We must cut off the transmission chain at a very key moment to stop suspected cases from spreading."
The government might use hotels or holiday campsites to isolate people should the need arise to undertake a large-scale quarantine at the community level, he said....

Good luck with quarenting anyone - the rioting, the law suits, the "unfair" profiling, the burnt cars.

The only people locked up will be the non- infectious compliant ones,

Race to stop spread of 'Sars': Hunt for family and friends of two Brits with deadly virus

13 Feb 2013 21:54
Six NHS staff were today being closely monitored for signs of symptoms after they had “close” contact with one of the patients

Doctors are scrambling to trace dozens of friends and relatives of two Brits hit by a deadly Sars-like virus to stop it spreading across the UK .

They want to test them urgently to see if they have caught the new coronavirus – and prevent them passing it on to yet more people.

The Health Protection Agency today revealed a Birmingham patient being treated for the strain is related to a Brit fighting for life in Manchester.

The Birmingham patient is the world’s 11th person to be diagnosed with the new strain, which has killed five people.

It is the third UK case but the first time it has passed between humans.

The first here was a 49-year-old man not from the UK.

He was flown by air ambulance from Qatar to St T [link to www.mirror.co.uk]

great, to think it might have stayed there - but no, they had to import it into England.

Those they are "scrambling " to find could be anywhere by now.

Think about it from a [email protected] point of view you wouldn't have to make any elaborate plans, just have a sympathetic health care worker to open the door and bingo.

Viet Nam 22/02/2013 Nation on alert over spread of SARS-like virus
VietNamNet Bridge – The Health Ministry has instructed localities to be vigilant over the spread of a potentially fatal virus that is similar to SARS (severe acute respiratory syndrome).
The so-called Corona virus has already caused six deaths around the globe.
A new case infected by the virus that was reported in the UK last week brought the global number of patients to 12, according to a report from the World Health Organisation (WHO).
The five deaths were recorded in Saudi Arabia, Jordan and the UK.
“Viet Nam has yet to detect any cases of people infected by the virus,” said deputy head of the ministry’s preventive medicine department Tran Than [link to english.vietnamnet.vn]

Secretary for Food and Health: I would like to mention here that yesterday a patient was admitted into a public hospital with fever and symptoms of upper respiratory infection. The patient also has a history of travel to the Middle East. Therefore, our frontline staff's alertness was heightened.

The case was reported to the Centre for Health Protection this morning. At the same time, the hospital staff have obtained specimen from the patient to conduct a rapid test. Up to this stage, the report showed that the specimen tested positive for influenza B, but negative for Novel Coronavirus.

We are still observing the patient. If necessary, we will repeat the test. However, up to this moment, the patient's specimen tested negative for Novel Coronavirus.

Mmmm, it wasnt that long ago that there was a patient that tested positive for H1N1 and the medicos thought that they had the case nailed, only to learn later that the same poor individual was also con- currently suffering for a parallel case of novel Coronavirus as well, but wasnt detected until it was too late because it was ASSUMED that the problem had been fully diagnosed.

This just proves the caution that everyone needs to be exhibiting these days.

And so we eventually arrive back at the same place we were at some time ago.

Why has the WHO decided to only report influenzas and probably coronaviruses on a monthly basis, when they previously reported on a dail basis?

Clearly monthly reporting adds a massive and highly significant retarded flow of extremely important information that is totally essential in order to manage the emergance of a new disease, so why move from a responsive position to a retarded situation?

There really is only one logical answer to that question and is a very unsavory concept to ponder, so how about it, WHO, please explain why you would retard the dissemination of highly important information that would hugely assist in limiting the spread of a fresh worldwide pandemic.

Why would you make this incredibly dangerous and community threatening choice.

What do you have to say regarding these illogical and reprehensible deviations for your core responsibilities to the wellbeing of the worlds population.

I am certain that each and every reader here is keenly awaiting your reasonable reply, so please let us all hear it.

And, just for good measure...

You are now on ntice.

I will persist with this line of questioning and agitating until a reasonable answer is forthcoming because I do not believe that you are acting according to your primary responsibilities, and I will call you to account for your actions as they are nothing less than dangerous and damaging.

So speak up.

Fever patient tests negative for novel coronavirus
(HKSAR) - The Centre for Health Protection (CHP) of the Department of Health (DH) received a report from Prince of Wales Hospital (PWH) today (February 27) of a suspected case of Severe Respiratory Disease associated with Novel Coronavirus.

The patient is a 39-year-old woman, with good past health, who presented with fever, cough and sore throat since February 23. She was admitted to the isolation ward of PWH today. Her current condition is stable.

Investigations by the CHP revealed that the patient travelled to Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, from February 20 to 22 and returned to Hong Kong on February 23.

Preliminary laboratory test results for the patient's nasopharyngeal aspirate today showed that it tested negative for Novel Coronavirus associated with Severe Respiratory Disease but positive for seasonal influenza A (H3).. [link to 7thspace.com]

"What we know really concerns me, but what we don't know really scares me," said Michael Osterholm, director of the U.S.-based Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy and a professor at the University of Minnesota...
.."There's nothing in the virology that tells us this thing is going to stop being transmitted," said Osterholm. "Today the world is one big virological blender. And if it's sustaining itself (in humans) in the Middle East then it will show up around the rest of the world. It's just a matter of time."

World Health Organization is trying to confirm reports of two additional cases

Officials Monitor Coronavirus to Avert SARS-Like Spread
By Anna Edney - Feb 27, 2013 11:03 AM ET
A deadly respiratory virus in the Middle East and U.K. is being monitored to see if it may evolve into a superbug like the 2002 SARS outbreak that killed almost 800 people, health officials said.

A novel coronavirus has infected 13 people, killing seven, Gwen Stephens, with the Saudi Arabia Ministry of Health, said at an American Society for Microbiology biodefense conference in Washington today. The World Health Organization is trying to confirm reports of two additional cases, she said.

Novel coronavirus infection - update

6 MARCH 2013 - The Ministry of Health in Saudi Arabia has informed WHO of a new confirmed case of infection with the novel coronavirus (NCoV).
The patient, a 69-year-old male, was hospitalized on 10 February 2013 and died on 19 February 2013. Preliminary investigation indicated that the patient had no contact with previously reported cases of NCoV infection and did not have recent history of travel.

To date, WHO has been informed of a global total of 14 confirmed cases of human infection with NCoV, including eight deaths. Of the total number, seven cases, including five deaths, have been reported from Saudi Arabia.
Based on the current situation and available information, WHO encourages all Member States (MS) to continue their surveillance for severe acute respiratory infections (SARI) and to carefully review any unusual patterns. WHO is currently working with international experts and countries where cases have been reported to assess the situation and review recommendations [link to www.who.int]

Re: Novel coronavirus infection –1 of 4 dead in U.K.,New death in Saudi Arabia
Your 10 days grace period is over

..WHO continues to closely monitor the situation.

That is very nice of them. What is not so nice, is that we have to wait so long to hear about it.
He was hospitalized on 10 February 2013 and died on the 19th. That was over 2 weeks since his death. Same as the last case. Do you see the time lapse we are getting? Your 10 days grace period is over. From now on you get no warning. Nothing. You will just get up and see on tv, that something big is going down.

WHAT? A new disease from Saudi Arabia?
Well, Kiddies, you are now, officially, not getting any warning from the WHO, the Saudi's, or any U.S. gov't officials. There are no warnings, alerts or even travel notices. EVERYBODY continues to closely monitor the situation. Hell, we already knew that too.
You can wait around for one, write about how special it is to be told of a case, or even retweet the same story 47 times..but you are still 2 weeks behind what is really happening.
Channie says don't stigmatize any countries that may have a new disease, to keep the info flowing in..Funny that it comes from the place where more outbreaks are hiddin from people, even more than Cambodia. Keep the info flowing to the WHO, who then sits on it. WHO continues to closely monitor the situation?

The total lack of specifics in these recent reports is amazing. I know more about when the president is going golfing than I know about this threat!
If the WHO is monitoring so closely, then why are they so late to report on it? Why are the Saudi's, who claim to be adhering to IHR, waiting for weeks to report them to the WHO?
Somebody is not being truthful on reporting what is happening there. Do you see any American airports taking special precautions against this new coronavirus, compared to other countries and their statements? Funny that HK and China are saying something about it every day. Denying rumors, closely watching travelers, even giving out H5N1 vaccines to people going to or working in risky bird flu areas.

How can we judge the threat, when we are not told of cases or clusters?
The latest death has no travel history, so this nails down Saudi Arabia as the main country of spread..and we don't know yet, the who, what, where he caught it from? Maybe I am being too suspicious of all these gov't agencies and countries. Maybe they will really tell us when it is out of control and spreading through casual contact. Maybe it already is.

WHO does not advise special screening at points of entry with regard to this event nor does it recommend that any travel or trade restrictions be applied.

If this is the case, then why is China doing it?..And since Channie is from China and leader of the WHO, do I think she doesn't know about or control it? Yeah, it sure does remind ME of a case of "de ja vu." Pay no attention the man behind the curtain. Don't stigmatize anybody?..What she meant to say was "Don't YOU stigmatize anybody." Your 10 days grace period is over.

..The DOH called on Taiwanese nationals with plans to visit the Middle East to take precautions, maintain their personal hygiene and avoid close contact with individuals with respiratory illness.

It also urged travelers arriving in Taiwan from the Middle East with similar symptoms to report to airport officials and receive an examination or be quarantined if necessary. [link to focustaiwan.tw]
