Epidemiological update: case of severe lower respiratory tract disease associated with a novel coronavirus

On 11 February 2013, the UK Health Protection Agency (HPA) announced that an additional case of the novel coronavirus (NCoV) infection has been confirmed in a UK resident. The patient, a 60 year old male, became ill on 26 January 2013 and was admitted to hospital in England, with a severe lower respiratory tract disease on 31 January.

In the 10 days before his illness onset, the patient had visited both Pakistan (from 16 December 2012 to 20 January 2013) and Saudi Arabia (from 20 to 28 January 2013). After hospital admission, his condition deteriorated and he was transferred for extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) treatment on 5 February. He remains severely ill in intensive care.

Laboratory investigations of respiratory specimens from 1 February have confirmed both an influenza A H1N1pdm09 infection and a NCoV infection. The Health Protection Agency (HPA) can confirm the diagnosis of a further case of novel coronavirus infection in a UK resident, who had recently travelled to the Middle East and Pakistan. The patient is receiving intensive care treatment in a Manchester hospital. This latest case brings the total number of confirmed cases globally to 10, of which two have been diagnosed in the UK.
Professor John Watson, head of the respiratory diseases department at the HPA, said: "The HPA is providing advice to healthcare workers to ensure the patient under investigation is being treated appropriately and that healthcare staff who are looking after the patient are protected. Contacts of the case are also being followed up to check on their health.

Doctors have confirmed the first case of known human-to-human spread of a deadly new respiratory virus in Britain.
The Health Protection Agency (HPA) said the man had been in close contact with a relative who had picked up the infection while travelling in the Middle East and Pakistan.
The so-called "novel" coronavirus causes severe breathing problems and has killed five of the 11 confirmed cases around the world. [link to news.sky.com]

Prof John Oxford, a virology expert at Queen Mary, University of London, said: "This doesn't raise too many alarm bells.
"In a family things can spread far more easily than they would spread outside, people share towels and toothbrushes etc.
"If it was somebody who was not related or a nurse or a doctor - that would be a lot more serious."
Prof Ian Jones, from the University of Reading, said: "There is really close contact involved here, it is not 'true' human transmission in the general public.
"Although it is severe, it's not doing anything worse than some other respiratory infections, it's just a new one."
Prof Wendy Barclay, from Imperial College London, said it was wise to keep a close eye on the virus.

A Pandemic would certainly "work" to help the cause of controlling civil dissent and gun grabbing in the U.S.

Many military and LEO personnel have stated they would not participate in taking the guns of civilians and infringing on the second amendment rights of Americans. However, if there was a "pan-demic" real or not....I'm sure it would cause a pan-ic....and the fear would push military/etc into "rounding up civilians" under the guise of it being for their own safety. ...This brings the total of laboratory-confirmed cases of severe pneumonia caused by the NCoV to eleven globally (see table below).
The information available suggests human-to-human transmission of the NCoV in this family cluster.
The HPA reports that surveillance of family, close contacts of the two patients and healthcare workers treating the two patients is ongoing, as per the UK National Guidelines. None are currently presenting with symptoms consistent with nCoV.
The HPA is also following-up regarding passengers who may have been exposed while flying with the case announced on 11 February 2013 and are in contact with the airline concerned.
In light of this human-to-human transmission of the NCoV within the family cluster, ECDC is now updating its risk assessment, previously published on 7 December 2012.

The above comments confirm a familial beta coronavirus cluster in the UK. The index case (60M) developed symptoms in Saudi Arabia prior his return to the UK, supporting human to human transmission to the latest confirmed case. The index case was co-infected with H1N1pdm09. Details on the collection date for the sample positive for H1N1pdm09 has not been released, which is also true for the sequence of the influenza virus.

A novel coronavirus has been diagnosed in a third person in the UK, providing the first evidence that it can be passed between people.

The Health Protection Agency (HPA) has confirmed that a third UK resident has been confirmed with the respiratory disease and is receiving intensive care treatment at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham.

WHO-Novel coronavirus infection – update

13 FEBRUARY 2013 - The United Kingdom (UK) has informed WHO of another confirmed case of infection with the novel coronavirus (NCoV). The patient is a UK resident and a relative of the case announced on 11 February 2013.
The latest confirmed case does not have any recent travel history outside the UK and is currently hospitalized in an intensive care unit. It is understood that this patient has pre-existing medical conditions that may have increased susceptibility to respiratory infections.
Confirmed NCoV in a person without recent travel history indicates that infection was acquired in the UK. To date, evidence of person-to-person transmission has been limited. Although this case is suggestive of person-to-person transmission, on the basis of current evidence, the risk of sustained person-to-person transmission appears to be very low.

Doctors are scrambling to trace dozens of friends and relatives of two Brits hit by a deadly Sars-like virus to stop it spreading across the UK .

They want to test them urgently to see if they have caught the new ­coronavirus – and prevent them passing it on to yet more people.

The Health Protection Agency today revealed a Birmingham patient being treated for the strain is related to a Brit fighting for life in Manchester.

The Birmingham patient is the world’s 11th person to be diagnosed with the new strain, which has killed five people.

The alert over a mysterious SARS-like virus should be extended to travelers from Britain, an infectious diseases doctor says.
This follows the third case of the novel coronavirus in Britain this month, involving a second family member of a 60-year- old man who became s.. "These concerns have been increased by the report suggesting the export of the novel coronavirus by a UK resident who developed symptoms while performing Umrah [the pilgrimage to Mecca] in Saudi Arabia," Niman said.
