On 5 February, an adult member of the same extended family of the two confirmed cases – who had not travelled abroad – developed an influenza-like illness. The illness remained mild, not requiring hospital admission, and there has been a full recovery. A sputum sample from this case was later confirmed to contain novel coronavirus. This case had limited exposure to the index case on three occasions while the latter was in hospital, and had no contact with the second case.

The limited contact that one of the cases had with the index case, however, leaves open the possibility of an intermediary case within the extended family.

The Health Protection Agency (HPA) continues its investigations into a family cluster of novel coronavirus infections in the UK. Three members of the same family have all tested positive for novel coronavirus. Two of these had no history of recent travel suggesting that transmission has occurred in the UK.
One person has sadly died. This patient had an underlying condition that may have made them more susceptible to respiratory infections. The first patient in this cluster, who had recent travel history to Saudi Arabia and Pakistan, is still receiving treatment. The third case, who had a mild illness, has recovered.

TORONTO – The current cluster of novel coronavirus cases in Britain may have included another infection, a World Health Organization official says.

To date, three members of an extended family have tested positive for the new virus, which is a cousin of the SARS coronavirus. One of the three died earlier this week.

But officials investigating how the virus moved from one member of the family to the next suspect another relative may have contracted the virus and may even have spread it to the third confirmed case in the cluster. 21 FEBRUARY 2013 - The Ministry of Health in Saudi Arabia has informed WHO of another confirmed case of infection with the novel coronavirus (NCoV).

The patient was hospitalized on 29 January 2013 and died on 10 February 2013. The case was laboratory-confirmed on 18 February 2013. Further investigation into this case is ongoing.

In the United Kingdom, the Health Protection Agency continues to investigate the family cluster where three members of the family tested positive for NCoV infection. One member of this family, who had an underlying health condition, has died.

To date, WHO has been informed of a total of 13 confirmed cases of human infection with NCoV, including seven deaths.

They are not done breaking the news to us yet and are doing it GENTLY. That frickin guy died almost 2 weeks ago and they finally gettin around to telling us. Confirmed on the 18th, and they already knew it but were probably tracking his family and contacts. There should soon be a travel alert for Saudi Arabia and probably the whole ME.. which is what it will take to try and calm this shit down. However now that it has been found in the U.K., it may be too late to get a handle on it.

I find its appearance and other characteristics to be very alarming.

Can you verify that, to date medical authorities are yet to locate either the initial reservour of the virus and also any responsible vector for it?

I find it most intriguing that it initially emerged in Jordan where we were both demanding answers about the outbreak of a 'strange respiratory" virus in a Jordanian hospital that killed several medical staff and a family member.

It then jumped to Saudi Arabia, but only after some considerable time period which would eliminate possible cross infection from humans but it also indicated a considerable distance in a relatively short time frame, bats?

Moving to today it has now emerged in numerous and diverse locations.

As youve been following this quite closely, can I ask if you are of the opinion that this bug will get going and end up being another pandemic killer.

With a 50% mortality rate and no effective treatment interventions, this has probably an equivalent potential for disaster as does H5N1 and could already be well and truely H2H transmissible as we have already witnessed.

Has there been any indication from authorities around the world of their recognising these potential dangers and have any actions been undertaken to get ahead of this bug, as it does seem to be spreading in unpredictable ways and at unpredictable times.

From a personal perspective, I will be passing through the Persian Gulf in the close future and even I am concerned about that journey.

Any broad thoughts from your research would be appreciated.

No vector yet, but they say it resembles a bat version of coronavirus, but it may be carried by camels or goats.

I think it has a distinct possibility of doing just that, and so do many scientist and researchers. Too much is unknown about it, and speaking of unknowns... all the gov'ts concerned are hiding up to date and critical information. Dude was dead for 2 weeks before they eve tell you about it. The death in the UK was taking cancer therapy.

They keep saying no problem and no widespread continuous h2h, but they are all getting ready and making plans for it. So with that in mind, err on the side of caution, just like they are.

The stuff is just too new to make a snap judgement on it like if it was a flu type infection. It has shown a tendency to go h2h in family and close settings, it is dangerous, and they are hiding info. They don't want to cause panic, but ALL gov'ts are watching close and some are implementing stricter border rules. They aren't doing it for nothing. I am not in panic mode, but it is a challenge to squeeze out the latest tidbit of info. A new report says there is no 4th case in England, but when you read the report, it says they aren;t looking for it in that particular instance anymore.
