So now the immuno compromised patient has died. Also there is a new medical report declaring the new crony can infect you faster than sars did. It also seems to be more powerful. There is a careful orchestration of "Good news, Bad news."
There is no widespread outbreak as of now, but with all the new reports coming in, it's a case of "Don't panic just yet, we are watching it."
Hard to say definitively, what it will do. I am inclined to think that it will get going. There are too many unknowns about it, but the more we are finding out, the worse it looks like it could be. As we are watching one thing, H5N1, another new threat surprises us again.
No, it's not a big conspiracy or gov't designed disease. They are worried as much we are, no matter WHAT you read. Shit looks stupid, and they are playing funny with all the actual facts. Notice the "Don't be surprised when it's in the U.S." stories we were getting yesterday. You are starting to see it on TV now..So stay informed.

New coronavirus as adept at infecting human lung cells as common cold: study
British authorities announced Tuesday that another person has died from infection with the new coronavirus as European scientists revealed the new virus easily infects the cells of the airways of the human lung.
In fact, the new coronavirus is as adept at infecting the cells of the upper airways as two cousin viruses — the one that caused SARS and one that causes common colds, the new study reported. All three are members of the coronavirus family.
Also on Tuesday, the World Health Organization tweaked its case definition for the new coronavirus, in what appears to be an attempt to ensure health officials don’t miss mild cases. That comes in the wake of the discovery of a mild infection in a British resident related to the person who just died.
The man who died — the sixth confirmed fatal infection with this virus — was part of a cluster of three cases in the U.K. Only one, the first diagnosed, had recently travelled abroad. He is believed to have been infected during his trip, which took him to Pakistan and Saudi Arabia.
The other two family members were infected in the U.K., the first time infections with this virus have been seen to have taken place outside the Middle East. They are the man who died and his female relative, who suffered only a mild illness and has since recovered.
Authorities believe the second and third cases in this family were infected via person-to-person transmission, but it appears there are still unanswered questions about the pattern of spread within this group.

Recombinomics Commentary 22:30
February 19, 2013

On 5 February, an adult member of the same extended family of the two confirmed cases – who had not travelled abroad – developed an influenza-like illness. The illness remained mild, not requiring hospital admission, and there has been a full recovery. A sputum sample from this case was later confirmed to contain novel coronavirus. This case had limited exposure to the index case on three occasions while the latter was in hospital, and had no contact with the second case.

The limited contact that one of the cases had with the index case, however, leaves open the possibility of an intermediary case within the extended family.

The above comments are from a detailed description by the HPA of the four cases who were novel betacornavirus confirmed in the UK. The other three cases had severe disease and were placed on life support (ECMO machines). The first case (49M) devel [link to www.recombinomics.com]

HPA Update on family cluster of novel coronavirus infection in the UK

19 February 2013
The Health Protection Agency (HPA) continues its investigations into a family cluster of novel coronavirus infections in the UK. Three members of the same family have all tested positive for novel coronavirus. Two of these had no history of recent travel suggesting that transmission has occurred in the UK.

One person has sadly died. This patient had an underlying condition that may have made them more susceptible to respiratory infections. The first patient in this cluster, who had recent travel history to Saudi Arabia and Pakistan, is still receiving treatment. The third case, who had a mild illness, has recovered.
Since September 2012, when an earlier case was diagnosed in the UK, there have been a total of 12 confirmed c [link to www.hpa.org.uk]

Human-to-Human Spread of New Virus Lifts Threat to EU

By Simeon Bennett - Feb 20, 2013 6:09 AM ET

Two probable cases of human-to-human transmission of the new coronavirus that’s killed six people increase the pathogen’s threat to the European Union, according to the bloc’s disease-tracking agency.
The appearance of a mild case of the disease caused by the virus also raises concern because it suggests more people may be infected than are known, have few or no symptoms, and are spreading the bug to others, the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control said in a report late yesterday.
The new virus, which is related to the one that killed 774 people in the SARS outbreak of 2002 and 2003, is known to have infected 12 people in the past year, and half of them died. Ten of those infe [link to www.bloomberg.com]

There may have been a fourth case in UK coronavirus family cluster: WHO
TORONTO – The current cluster of novel coronavirus cases in Britain may have included another infection, a World Health Organization official says.

To date, three members of an extended family have tested positive for the new virus, which is a cousin of the SARS coronavirus. One of the three died earlier this week.

But officials investigating how the virus moved from one member of the family to the next suspect another relative may have contracted the virus and may even have spread it to the third confirmed case in the cluster. This fourth family member had a respiratory illness but was not tested until after she recovered, at which point the test came back negative.

Dr. Anthony Mounts, the WHO’s point person for the new coronavirus outbreak, says the U.K. cluster adds slightly to the WHO’s concern over the virus, but in the main serves to confirm some things the organization has already strongly suspected.

Those are: In some circumstances, person-to-person spread can occur, though so far, it appears those chains of infection has been short. And while the first few cases spotted all involved ..

Novel coronavirus infection - update

21 FEBRUARY 2013 - The Ministry of Health in Saudi Arabia has informed WHO of another confirmed case of infection with the novel coronavirus (NCoV).

The patient was hospitalized on 29 January 2013 and died on 10 February 2013. The case was laboratory-confirmed on 18 February 2013. Further investigation into this case is ongoing.

In the United Kingdom, the Health Protection Agency continues to investigate the family cluster where three members of the family tested positive for NCoV infection. One member of this family, who had an underlying health condition, has died.

To date, WHO has been informed of a total of 13 confirmed cases of human infection with NCoV, including seven deaths.

Saudi Arabia reports new coronavirus case; UK wonders about 4th case in cluster

By: Helen Branswell, The Canadian Press
TORONTO - Saudi Arabia has discovered another infection with the novel coronavirus, the World Health Organization announced Thursday.
The infected person was hospitalized in late January and died on Feb. 10, but confirmation of the infection was only made Feb. 18, the WHO said in a statement...In addition, there are nearly a dozen cases the WHO considers "probable" infections — people who were exposed to cases and who later became sick but who were not tested or weren't tested in time. If an infected person had recovered from the illness, current tests — which look for virus DNA in mucus — would not find evidence of infection...
..The WHO revised its new coronavirus case definition this week to remind doctors not to automatically rule out people with mild symptoms when they look for possible cases...
Others share the WHO's concern about the possibility of missed cases. In fact, several of the researchers who were key players in the response to the 2002-2003 SARS epidemic admit the patterns they are seeing bring back memories.
"It is certainly beginning to look concerning, given the obvious fact that there can be onward transmission," said Malik Peiris, chair of the department of microbiology at the University of Hong Kong...The fact that we are finding these cases in Europe and not anywhere else, that has to raise suspicion," Fouchier says
. "What we're seeing in Europe is just the tip of the iceberg and we really have no clue how big the iceberg is." lots more here [link to www.winnipegfreepress.com] and at my blog.

They are not done breaking the news to us yet and are doing it GENTLY. That frickin guy died almost 2 weeks ago and they finally gettin around to telling us. Confirmed on the 18th, and they already knew it but were probably tracking his family and contacts. There should soon be a travel alert for Saudi Arabia and probably the whole ME.. which is what it will take to try and calm this shit down. However now that it has been found in the U.K., it may be too late to get a handle on it.

Re: Novel coronavirus infection –1 of 4 dead in U.K.,New death in Saudi Arabia
Hi Treyfish.

Great to see you reporting on this new NCoV.

I find its appearance and other characteristics to be very alarming.

Can you verify that, to date medical authorities are yet to locate either the initial reservour of the virus and also any responsible vector for it?

I find it most intriguing that it initially emerged in Jordan where we were both demanding answers about the outbreak of a 'strange respiratory" virus in a Jordanian hospital that killed several medical staff and a family member.

It then jumped to Saudi Arabia, but only after some considerable time period which would eliminate possible cross infection from humans but it also indicated a considerable distance in a relatively short time frame, bats?

Moving to today it has now emerged in numerous and diverse locations.

As youve been following this quite closely, can I ask if you are of the opinion that this bug will get going and end up being another pandemic killer.

With a 50% mortality rate and no effective treatment interventions, this has probably an equivalent potential for disaster as does H5N1 and could already be well and truely H2H transmissible as we have already witnessed.

Has there been any indication from authorities around the world of their recognising these potential dangers and have any actions been undertaken to get ahead of this bug, as it does seem to be spreading in unpredictable ways and at unpredictable times.

From a personal perspective, I will be passing through the Persian Gulf in the close future and even I am concerned about that journey.

Any broad thoughts from your research would be appreciated.

Keep up your always excellent work.

cheers

No vector yet, but they say it resembles a bat version of coronavirus, but it may be carried by camels or goats.

are of the opinion that this bug will get going and end up being another pandemic killer.
I think it has a distinct possibility of doing just that, and so do many scientist and researchers. Too much is unknown about it, and speaking of unknowns... all the gov'ts concerned are hiding up to date and critical information. Dude was dead for 2 weeks before they eve tell you about it. The death in the UK was taking cancer therapy.

They keep saying no problem and no widespread continuous h2h, but they are all getting ready and making plans for it. So with that in mind, err on the side of caution, just like they are.

The stuff is just too new to make a snap judgement on it like if it was a flu type infection. It has shown a tendency to go h2h in family and close settings, it is dangerous, and they are hiding info. They don't want to cause panic, but ALL gov'ts are watching close and some are implementing stricter border rules. They aren't doing it for nothing. I am not in panic mode, but it is a challenge to squeeze out the latest tidbit of info. A new report says there is no 4th case in England, but when you read the report, it says they aren;t looking for it in that particular instance anymore. The person was sick but never tested, so another mild case in my opinion. Subject: Correction to ProMED-mail statement [in Novel coronavirus - East. Med. "It is somewhat reminiscent of the emergence of SARS in 2002."

Ron Fouchier, a virologist at Erasmus Medical Centre in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, also sees those similarities.

And Fouchier is concerned about how many infections may be going unnoticed, untested or unreported. He notes that several of the 12 confirmed cases were diagnosed in European hospitals.

In addition to the current family cluster in Britain, one case from Qatar was diagnosed in Britain in September and a second from Qatar was diagnosed in Germany in October. Both men got sick in Qatar but left the country for treatment — a practice which is not uncommon for wealthy residents of Middle Eastern countries.

"The fact that we are finding these cases in Europe and not anywhere else, that has to raise suspicion," Fouchier
