Halcyon Dayz, FCD User ID: 31033756 Netherlands 02/14/2013 06:32 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | So, you re saying that the mass of the earth (and the moon)is perfectly known (must be), Quoting: ADO Perfectly enough. We do have scales, you know. in order to calculate the exact effect on a unknown (tiny) mass of an object. And the way to calculate that perfect number is the same formula you are quoting to determinate the effect of that mass, with a constant G, calculated about 250 years ago, Quoting: ADO G has been measured. WTF! so how can you say a formula established on earth works in a different, very different enviroment?? Quoting: ADO That "formula" was derived from observing celestial motion. "As below, so above." We can predict solar eclipses centuries in advance. Reaching for the sky makes you taller. Hi! My name is Halcyon Dayz and I'm addicted to morans. |
Halcyon Dayz, FCD User ID: 31033756 Netherlands 02/14/2013 06:35 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | If they can not estimate the size correctly, how can we believe that they estimated the exact path? Quoting: Anonymous Coward 33891652 This! If you magically replaced the Earth with a bowling ball, would its orbit change? yes, I would like to know why you think so. Let's try again. ISS and astronaut. The astronaut's mass is 1/1,000th of that of the ISS. The astronaut gently pushes off and is now a separate object in orbit around the Earth. Is his/her orbit different from the ISS's? If so, why so? if you put a bowling ball with the mass of a typical bowling ball at our earths place in the universe, and this asteroid comes its way, something would change. Quoting: phoenixe Yes, something... DA14's trajectory would be a near straight line rather than curved as shown here: [link to neo.jpl.nasa.gov] And that is all due the Earth's mass, NOT the asteroids. What is the actual impact risk of tomorrow's flyby? All I've read is "zero chance" and "near-zero chance". What is the actual percentage? Quoting: Australian Coward 29759371 0. Also the increase in size does seem weird.. Does this normally happen with other newly discovered asteroids as they approach near earth? Quoting: Australian Coward 29759371 Its size didn't increase. Our understanding of its size did. A distant asteroid is just a point of light in the telescope. We know where it is, i.e. its distance from the Sun and its distance from us. We know how bright it appears. We know how reflective the average asteroid is. This gets you a size estimate that should be correct within 3 orders of magnitude, it's a ballpark figure. "50 metres" might mean an highly reflective 10 metre object, or a very dark 200 metre object. If it gets closer you get a lot more data to work with so you can narrow it down much more precisely. Isn't it true that Nasa's astromentric data and trajectory formulas require constant adjustment in practice as in with planetary exploration vehicles? Quoting: 'En Kai Pan No. And it isn't NASA's "astromentric data and trajectory formulas". Everybody with a telescope, or a subscription the the MPC Newsletter, can get the data. Everybody with access to a library can get the "formulas" from books printed long before there was a NASA. They rely on gravity to work. So, it is safely to assume that he was passing Earth about 1 time / year or at least 6 times in the last 10 years. Now, if this year 2012 DA14 passes 17,500 miles off earth, it is logical to assume that last year he also passed very close. And 2 years before also. Actually, based on current estimates, he passed every year very close to Earth, at least in the last 20 years. HOW THE HELL THEY DIDN'T FOUND IT 5 years ago? Or 10 years ago? We are observing the space beween Earth and Moon and we know EVERYTHING that passes in our space ! This not a damn pulsar 10 billion light year away. Quoting: Reality420 This isn't the most Arrogantly Ignorant post I've seen on GLP but it does rate a Dishonourable Mention. R. you must have missed recollecter a few pages back. his ignorance is as vast as space itself I hesitate to look. A Bronze Medalist, perhaps? It's the usual thing. Asteroid doom is a perennial GLP favourite. As is Comet doom... with the obligatory "debris trail doom". It brings out the scientifically illiterate and innumerate who, for some reason, revel in putting on display their abject ignorance... kinda' like obese people wearing bikinis and Speedos at the beach. One can only look on in appalled fascination. It does provide a lot of amusement, however. Have fun. R. So, not only the the so called pundits of the forum don´t understand logic 101, also lack the minimum range of attention to read that im not saying the thing will hit, you must be an idiot to affirm (and want) that. If you´re the top notch of the forums, well..., then i know why real top scientist dont enter here, would be laughable for them...and i remember that science, the real one, is open to all possibilties, without prejudicce, so is the only way to advance in knowledeg, but you arrogants punks take an ecuation from 300 years ago calculated and tested on earth and think is the shit for the eternity and beyond. THANK YOU ! |
Curious George User ID: 12825086 South Africa 02/14/2013 07:32 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I have a simple question based on a simple observation. If the initial trajectory had been worked out for an object assumed to be 47m diameter, and now suddenly they say it is 65m diameter. Surely that will more than double the mass and the calculations would need to be thoroughly reworked? Has this been done? Has the trajectory changed at all as a result? |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 34327872 Chile 02/14/2013 07:50 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | So, you re saying that the mass of the earth (and the moon)is perfectly known (must be), Quoting: ADO Perfectly enough. You even know what G is?? "has been measured"....no, it has been ESTIMATED...waaaaaaaaaaaaaay to different thing: The accuracy of the measured value of G has increased only modestly since the original Cavendish experiment. G is quite difficult to measure, as gravity is much weaker than other fundamental forces, and an experimental apparatus cannot be separated from the gravitational influence of other bodies. Furthermore, gravity has no established relation to other fundamental forces, so it does not appear possible to calculate it indirectly from other constants that can be measured more accurately, as is done in some other areas of physics. Published values of G have varied rather broadly, and some recent measurements of high precision are, in fact, mutually exclusive.[3][6] you know, google the thing and you can find interesting things besides the gagnman video stuff. No, the formula was derived from observation and DEDUCED. In fact, the formula didnt explain the motion of the mercury so enter Einstein to solve the problem...get educated boy... |

Quoting: pray_Italy 34224359 Like standing on a road and watching small cars on the horizon getting bigger and bigger while approaching prior to impact/flyby ;) OMG that is not the case. Objects do NOT grow in relationship to a point of observation. This rock's profile is being updated. |
