It's because of the snow. They're normal home is probably not available and their food sources have become scarce. I've been seeing an unusual number of critters like possums lately, I think for the same reasons. And possums are in heat in Jan-Feb ,also.

What makes them difficult to deal with [raccoons,possums] is they have no fear of humans. They're semi-domesticated wild animals.

Had quite a few raccoons as pets.
One time 4 babies, had to feed them the
Kitty replacement formula, bought a case at a time.
The babies are very cute.
Raised a baby male to adult, could take him for a ride in my van, when I returned to the apartment, he would follow me from the van to inside.
Got scratched by their claws a lot, never bit.
Their paws are very soft.

Did he ever return?
