Re: How Many MINIMUM WAGE Hours Does it Take to Afford an Apartment in Your State?
Minimum wage is just a starting point for teenagers and people just entering the workforce or the retired as a hobby, it is NOT designed as a career choice.
 Quoting: BRIEF

yet many with educations work at or a little above minimum wage, well into their 30s or more...because why? If there were enough jobs, you can bet all those people would be working them...human beings, when treated fairly don't choose to sit around or do the same thing (or nothing). It's a natural part of life to evolve...yet our systems encourage just the opposite.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1271534

I agree entirely.

In the mid 90s, no one really cared what minimum wage was, because if you were an able adult, even with little experience, you could fetch a decent job for 10-15 bucks an hour, no prob.

After around 2007, that has changed DRASTICALLY. I know more recent college grads working close to minimum wage than EVER before.

And you know what? Even the people I know working 10-15dllars/hr right now, they don't have even CLOSE to the same purchasing power as 10-15dollars/hr got you in the mid 90s.

THAT is why they are raising minimum wage. Not only can no one really survive on minimum wage, but nowadays, even being SINGLE, its hard to survive on 9-12dollars/hr.

If you are like me, and have a family to support, good luck surviving on 10-15anhour, PERIOD.
 Quoting: TheSuperMarket

When the minimum wage is raised everything will go up to pay for the increase in wages. So the raise will really buy nothing more than what you were making before. Plus, people will be laid off when employers cannot afford to hire unskilled labor for 9 bucks an hour. They will demand much more for that 9 bucks and people will be doing the work of at least two or more people. And forget teens or anyone with no experience ever getting jobs. They won't be working unless they self-employ themselves.

what a load of hypocricisy

I like the people who keep saying that is your foult if you get a minum wage.

is like telling to all those people that provide important basic services which paycheck is kept low by the market that they should not be intitled to have a home, or eat etc

Why people like Brief don't go around and tells simply to the cleaners, waiters etc that they just think they are sub-humans. Obviously sub-humans wich cheapness they can profit every day

My issue is I'm 22 and I said fuck taking out loans for college. I'm a self taught type of guy. I buy books, I read them.

What would you suggest to someone who sees a degree as wasted paper in an economy where 6/10 college grads can't find work in their area?

I thought about joining a union, but they disgust me. I also thought about opening a Pizza Shop, I live in a city, I know the business, been working it since I was 16 for a foreign prick who hates americans basically. Do you wagetards understand that when a business's expenses go up all they do is pass it along to the end consumer in the form of higher prices?

Do you understand that when it gets too expensive to hire someone to empty waste baskets and take out the trash that the employer will just eliminate the position altogether and have existing employees empty their own waste baskets and take their own trash out?

Pursuit of happiness, its part of the Constitution. Why would a country or system punish the not so ambitious that just want a simple life without all the modern conveniences? Forcing people to live with artificial stresses?

I think nobody enjoys working over 45 hours a week but you have to to maintain some semblance of shelter, nutrition, health, hygiene, and personal mobility so you work more. Stress is mounting to where you come to a point and say is it worth it? Heart attack at 32 is fun?

I hope there is a possibility that the LCD in our society can have the minimum and still live a productive happy life, all of you.

First of all raising the minimum wage will do jack shit. If companies make less profit because of wages then all they will do is turn around and increase the price of their goods.

All an increase in minimum wage is doing is causing inflation.

Adjusted for inflation from 1960 til now minimum wage should be $16/hr.

So what was good for teenagers in 1960 is good as a minimum wage today.

So yes you are correct. But it doesn't change a thing.

I seem to see countries that are raising their wages have higher growth.

Australia, Canada, China.

And countries that have stagnant wages having stagnant growth.

United States, United Kingdom, Germany

And countries that have shrinking wages in recession.

Portugal, Spain, Greece.

Any way you slice it. I'm right.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 3987337

LOL, what's the minimum wage in China?
 Quoting: BRIEF

Funny you didn't mention the other two Brief.

Australia $16+ per hour.
Canada $9.75-$10.30

Both of which are higher than our $7.25/hr and both of which currencies are higher than ours.

So again why does that work for them but not the US?

The answer is that inflation isn't immediate.

There is a lag in the increase in money and the inflation that follows. During that time people can buy more stuff.

So again. Why is every country on the planet with a growing economy raising their wages?

You can't answer that because it proves you wrong.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 3987337

Whats the cost of living in Canada and Australia compared to where you live?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1456476

Exactly. A simple trip to the grocery store will dispute this argument. Take a look at any magazine. The US price will be something like 4-8 dollars. The canadian price will be like 9-14 dollars. Obviously comparing the minimum wage of 2 different currencies, without scaling them, is pointless.

Where do people get that they are owed anything?

There should be no minimum wage. Let the employer set the amount and then a person can decide if they want to work for them or not.

 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1550123

I HIGHLY disagree with. Here's why: As I mentioned earlier in the thread, the difference between the mid90s to now, is drastic.

In the mid90s, your college degree meant something. It CERTAINLY meant something before the mid90s, as well. We aren't talking liberal degrees. I'm talking degrees in Engineering, Math, Science, etc.

Nowadays, I know MANY people with those degrees, working just a tad over minimum wage fresh out of college. Back in the day, with those degrees, you'd be recruited by top firms and businesses before you had your degree in your hand. It has changed DRASTICALLY.

While your point is true, that yes, today a trade school is looking more appealing than a regular bachelor degree, it SHOULDNT be that way. It certainly WASNT that way, so you can't blame the intelligent youth, who were taught by their parents and society their WHOLE life that in order to be successful, they need to go to college.

Now they get out of college, did EVERYTHING they were told by their parents and society, and they can't even get a decent job.

Sure, I even know a few of them making 30-40grand/year fresh out of college, although those are in the minority. In the mid 90s, the ones makes 30-40grand I know, would be making 40-50grand fresh out of college. And guess what? That 30-40grand those FEW lucky ones are making fresh out of college? Thats comparable to about 20-30grand/year in the mid90s.

Do you see my point?

My life's wages in brief:

1989, McDonald's: $3.25 / hr
1989-92, US Army: Less than minimum wage, but I got free room, board, clothing, healthcare, and psychiatric counseling after the war. Left, right, left, right, left, right, KILL!!!
1992 - 96, Darryls restaurant: $2.13 / hr + tips
1996 - 99, web designer: $15 / hr
1999 - 00, school teacher: Approx $10 / hour (screw that)
2000 - 03, IBM.com web team contractor: $25 / hr
2003 - 08, Founding member of a franchise: $12.50 / hr to start the business. $23 / hr after we became successful.
Then the bottom dropped out.
2008 - 10, Unemployed, and not able to draw unemployment since I was not technically laid off.
2010 - 13, Self employed: Wages vary from week to week. But since I work a 75 hour week, it now averages to about $13 / hr.

Why not go back to school to become an electrician? You can then eventually have your own business and hire others. If you are talented in this then go to a trade school. Or if you like computers then do something with that. Find your talent/s and go with it. You are still so young and have the future way ahead of you. Get a bunch of roommates if needed to make this happen or live in your parent's basement so to speak. But get trained in something you are good at like the above and you will make it far in this life and become self-employed business owner if that is what you want.

Business is about commerse. It is no more just about the employer than it is just about the employee or just about the consumer.

ALL those relationships are in play, sacrifice one and the business fails.
What we have now is the endgame of an adverserial approach. There are constants, absolutes that should hold true no matter what. When one enters into a relationship, the preservation of that relationship is everyones responsibility. That is the key.

HUMAN BEINGS are NOT created to be slaves or tools or profit whores.

I don't disagree with anything BRIEF has said on THIS thread (Just this thread, hehe), but one point to BRIEF is this:

Many of the people I mentioned above, who got non-liberal college degrees, and are making crap pay out of college, if they had done the SAME THING in the mid90s, they're futures would be secure.

So what I'm saying, is that today, even if you do everything you are SUPPOSED TO, there is a higher chance of failure, at least in the short term, due to the economic /financial problems our country is facing.

One thing though, most of these people I know, thanfully aren't complaining. They are taking what they are getting, living on BARE minimum, and most are paying off their student loans. I think things WILL get better, and those people will be fine.

My point is just that times HAVE changed, and it isn't just the lazy and dumb who arent making ends meet these days.

 Quoting: BRIEF

Oh, did I strike a nerve? This could be a long list. NOBODY with any integrity would make fun of people based on economic conditions they were born into--like chinese workers. NOBODY with any integrity would call for the wholesale slaughter of a group of people based upon their religion. NOBODY with any integrity would call those less fortunate lazy because they don't have access to the same opportunities as others. NOBODY with any integrity would claim to be a "rebel with MORALS" with such a contradictory history of violent communications.

Okay, your turn. Now try to prove me wrong by doing one of the things I just called you out for...
 Quoting: skeptic 8198777

It's because I expect people to have integrity that I hold them to high standards...those born in poverty can work hard and get out of poverty, to stay and wallow in poverty shows lack of integrity...

Therefore I have integrity because I choose to do for myself instead of depending on others...read this, doubt you will understand it though.

No, I don't give a shit how you came to your inane conclusions in life, and I won't be baited into your little psychodrama attempt at justifying your bigotry (which you erroneously call "holding others to a higher standard") You cannot even begin to answer my statements because you and everyone reading (yes, including your sock accounts) is waiting--albeit with baited breath--for you to prove me wrong. Your own words, however, are a glaring inconsistency to the nonsense you spew out on a daily basis.

First off, One person cannot enter into a relationship. By definition a "relationship" requires at least two people. Hey, we keep hearing about how what two consenting adults agree to is their own business. Why doesn't that apply to the employer and employee? If an employee is willing to work for what an employer wants to pay, how is that anyone else's business?

Wait, I though you said you had a job?
 Quoting: skeptic 8198777

I own several businesses, why?
 Quoting: BRIEF

I agree with damn near everything you say Brief. I work a minimum wage job though, and I'm not retarded, or a slacker. I'm a computing whiz and I've done my fair share of moonlighting as an electrician for buddies.

I think raising minimum wage is a shit idea. There are two types of people in this world:
1. Those that think they need a job to make money, and
2. Those that make money

I stay mainly because I've been there so long he can't fire me for anything I do, and job security is nice.

Would you open a food business in this economy?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 32844749

I wouldn't start any business in this economy...everyone I know is in survival mode at this point...

He could still go to a trade school to be an electrician or to do something with computers.
