Re: Fuck computer programming as a career
Come on guy, I'm just braggin bout my skill I refused to sell to the system pimps. I enjoyed making these things even though in todays standards, they are nothing unless wrapped in a shocking spectacle of graphics and animation.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 18237036

But you are absolutely correct. Computers haven't done anything new or exciting for years now. IE6 and HTML3 or whatever it was at the time vs today's various standards has taken literal man millenia of labor on our part and what do we have to show for it except fancy eye candy wrapped around everything?

It's almost like an entire generation has been tricked into wasting their youthful energy on a completely dead end "skill" that is of absolutely no use to anything but the system itself. Funny, that.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 30981074

HTML 5 and css3 are actually pretty exciting, some of the sites being done with them are pretty impressive and swift. Also, the whole market knows the desktop and the console are dead..., all the progress is being made in tablets. I do graphic design and ux, my main job is probably finding new clients.. but I admit I outsource the dev work to India. I used to work in the video game industry as a producer, i do admit i felt bad for some of the programmers, but the higher up guys seemed to be livingpretty large, and seemed happy. Peace, and good luck!
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 24633450

Everything I do now is responsive, for that reason. Only time I need to do a media query is if the primary nav menu is long and needs to become a dropdown on smartphones. Now that I've pretty much settled on a grid, a new site takes surprisingly little time and headache to launch.
 Quoting: Keep2theCode

Absolutely, all this responsive stuff we needed flash and fancy js to do a couple years ago can be done with HTML/CSS now, lots of possibilities for creative designers. I like the new direction web dev is going. minimalism and back to basics classic design, full font control, solid grids, slick responsive ux, classic colors.

I still feel ops pain, sounds like hes working on some outdated shitty software. But not everything is all bad, it's a big market. Peace!

Re: Fuck computer programming as a career
I taught myself programming about 26 years ago. I'm still doing it. I enjoy my personal projects, but hate working for others. Website design is the worst. I've had enough clients go to hell the moment they pipe up like "My (wife/daughter/niece) took a class in web design, and she thinks.."

A bad day for me is when someone asks me to generate a nonsensical report. Other than that, most of my job is automated, they just don't know it. :-D
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 34496640

Sounds very familiar.

I'm a semi-retired web developer, and there have been times I removed my business link from a site because I was ashamed of what the client made me do for them. They're also quick to vent their spleen on you for every little thing that goes wrong, even when you prove that it was their own fault for not using the software as they made you design it to work. I had to add a disclaimer to my contract that their local ISP issues are not my fault or responsibility.

Yeah, the automation... I back up whole site databases with one click.
 Quoting: Keep2theCode

Cron job - auto backup dude. Forget the click!
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 34399218

The click is mostly for the clients so they can have their own copy of the backups. I like redundancy; helps me sleep better at night.
 Quoting: Keep2theCode

Ahh OK.

35+ Year programmer here.

OP needs to quit whining. Businesses us I.T. to increase productivity, NO OTHER REASON. You don't like that get a different job.

Jesus, right noe the coding market is so hot we're starting an intern program with free training because we simply can't fill all the positions.

People are living on crappy food stamps, begging in the streets and you're bitching because what you get paid very well to do is BORING YOU!!

First world problem son.

An experienced coder can pull down $50, $80, $100+ an hour right now. If you're not being paid at LEAST $50.00 an hour you need to brush up on your skill set and shop your self around.

For fun, I code mobile games. I have my own side company where I channel my creative urges. Also, I am picky about the kinds of work I do.

I bet you're a full time employee....bad move dude. CONTRACT work is where the big bucks and job sanctification is. Overtime? Fuck you, pay me. Project over budget? Fuck you, pay me. Want another screen? Fuck you, pay me. Want to treat me like crap? Fuck you, contract's up...talk to the door.

Coders have it made right now. Companies haven't been training new talent, thinking that outsourcing will solve their problems. As the dollar collapses, Indian's and Chinese coders can make almost the same overseas without the hassles.

So now there's an incredible shortage of I.T. manpower in the USA. The client I'm at now is a fortune 50 company and they can't get a decent HTML 5 / JavaScript coder after 5 months of looking. There are plenty of php hacks out there, but someone who understands Enterprise level standards is rare as hen's teeth.

Native U.S. coders are a premium commodity right now. There's no reason for you to accept crappy working conditions or low pay unless you just suck at your trade.

Atleast it was balanced, because every single fucking caveman were working on same thing, and getting same amount of thing.

Now thousands of programmers work all day long in a stress which most people wouldn't take and suicide, and for what ? Just for their company owners can earn billions from your work and spend it cruising the world. And you earn some bucks to fill your stomach and pay taxes, of course. And oh if you are lucky you can get your hands on brand new tech created by other hard working man!

Meh... It's been pretty good to me. I don't even have a degree, either. I do know how to build large-scale, data driven web apps, however, so I can keep at my current job or do contracts, freelance, etc. when that ends at some point.

It's better than slingin' hash, working in a factory, or being some sales/marketing weasel, for sure.

To all you programmers.....

There is a huge need for an electronic medical record that is worth a crap. I am a family practice doctor that has worked with 3 major electronic medical records, allscripts, misys and meditech. They are all very lacking in user friendliness and overall usability. Someone is going to write an emr that will sweep the market. If I had a good programmer that I could trust, we could develop and emr and get filthy stinking rich and get off the treadmill.

Email me if you have experience and are interested.

Larry
[email protected]
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 34364887

Strange email for a doctor. Strange message board for one as well.

Anyway, I may do some research, but getting any given doctor to part with whatever their sales reps push at them, especially if it involves retraining staff, is a big wall to knock down. I agree their systems are stupid and designed for the 1980s, but not even doctor's offices like change.
 Quoting: Keep2theCode

I work in the medical field. That's part of the stuff I am complaining about. lol. I can't tell you how many programs I have wrote for the hospital. We are a small outfit and have only 13 locations (2 major hospitals) so I do everything there from initial consultations and planning, development of front end and back end, documentation, maintenance...
 Quoting: Th3aLi3n

Lol, we have a integration with Meditech going on this month, now that is a company that likes to challenge third parties.

Mission critical spaces like this are choice for applications development. Niche protocols, such as HL7 and DICOM as antiquated as they seem, are very valuable and can lead to all sorts of invention and novelty. I have been the lead developer on a CTRM project for three years now, and it gets more and more exiting to work on with each new revision.

Anyone who spends long hours writing code is also brain building with the weights of pure logic. This has benefits in all aspects of mental life and can lead to higher interests and lab work that most people would not even attempt. He who learns to code, falls into his own hands.

I understand. I'm simply saying that eventually they will realize there is some Chinese or Indian firm that will do the work for half the price. I'm simply saying that no one is actually immune to forces of "increased corporate earnings".

Once every single unnecessary job has been eradicated, they will start moving on to the once-necessary-but-not-anymore jobs.

The reason for this is the necessity for them to increase their earnings ever quarter or face the "market consequences". Here we have hedge funds, investment banks, billionaires and pension funds essentially in charge. Nothing matters to them save the fact that the earnings are greater next quarter and thus the stock goes up a little.

An entire system of non-workers sitting from upon high demanding that their slaves produce a little more for them next quarter. It won't end until the system collapses.

People like you seem to forget, that being a Java coder who can get that "fortune 50 company" job, will be working for complete scum of the planet.

Also, they will be poisoning the Internet, on behalf of their bosses, scum of the planet.

Soulless turds like yourself, have no ethics, and wouldn't stop a freight train rolling over ten thousand school buses full of kids. You are empowered by a demon, of money.

True Americans who understand tech, like myself working in IT and supporting empty headed know nothing programmers and scumbag IT managers, know that the IT sector is designed to implode.

I hope your "client" that pays your dirty paycheck, finds their HTML5 and Java expert, and that their network as a result gets destroyed by Oracle, who has poisoned Java, which was kinda shitty to begin with. You will not be missed or rememebered as you shuffle along doing Satans work for however many years of life you have left. Some of us will escape Earth with our soul intact. Most will not.

Technology is becoming more and more advanced, the possibilities seem to advance by the day. Lots of people already lost their jobs because of technology, something we don't hear much about in the media, they just blame the bad economy for the high unemployment rates. When the economy will move up again we will realize that a lot of those jobs that went gone "because of the bad economy" will never return.

Companies can get rid of lots of personnel, but their personnel are also those who keep the economy alive. If you let technology take over too many jobs you will end up with a messed up system that will eventually collapse.

It's the art of finding a right balance between technology and people, but unfortunately companies are being led by money, especially money on the short term.
