In 2008 I traveled from Johannesburg to Lagos, Nigeria, with my 5 year old son in the seat next to mine. Along the way, a white man, who was in his late fifties or there about and whose seat was directly in front of my son's, suddenly exploded and warned me that if my boy disturbed him again he would spank him. I was so shocked that a man of that age could react that way to a 5-year old hitting the back of his seat with his hand or leg. May be realizing that we were headed to Lagos and not Canberra, he relocated to an empty seat well behind us.

On the other hand, in 2006 I and my family had just got down from an airplane in Southern Africa and a white woman was so thrilled by the appearance of my 18-month old daughter that she happily said, "Oh, she looks like a doll."

The problem probably has more to do with the male specie than with the color of the skin.
