Especially since I heard it was being shut down. It houses hundreds of mentally ill patients, but most of them have a harmless diagnosis that you wouldn't expect to being such vulgar and scary behaviors. I know we are out of money and running on a debt system, but I like to envision something being down about this issue before they get to the point were they are just cages animals. Perhaps try to correct the behaviors when they are still young enough to work with. I believe the johnny knoxville movie about the special Olympics was filled at the aforementioned facility, sorry 'compound', so it's not all rotten apples, they just happen to lump all varying degrees of adults with disabilities there.. not sure what my point was. So here's a hug guys. |

If a staff member did this - or allowed another student to do this to the child - they are legally liable and can be sued along with their school district and anyone else involved. Quoting: MarkinAZ If this was done to humiliate the child or harm her in any way (and it's hard to imagine it otherwise) they're in deep shit!! How dare they do something like this to a disabled child? uh excuse me- her SHOES were ATTATCHED TO HER FEET via duct tape. her feet were NOT taped together etc. definitely get the meaning of this as it could even be something as STUPID AS THE KID constantly removing her shoes to throw them etc. flame away and feel better. |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 28167778 So Sad. Indeed. The mentally ill are currently in a troubling time. They're being used as political pawns to further an agenda of brainwashing against normal people. The idea is to make people who suffer from mental illness seem dangerous and untrustworthy, then define anyone who does not "obey" as "mentally ill" and arrest them. Considering that statement....you have some mental illness as well. WOW! So the mentally ill should be allowed to totally roam free among SANE people? Hey... let's give them some knives and guns too while were at it! With medicine, treatment by both a psychologist and a therapist along with a good support structure a mentally ill person can be a productive member of society. You wouldn't even know a person was mentally ill if you talked with them every day. Mental illness is like a physical illness. It needs to be taken care of. The person doesn't need to be treated like a leper, they aren't contagious and very few are actually "dangerous". You've been watching horror movies and swallowing the media koolaid far too much. Unfortunately there are a few, very small percentage of dangerous mentally ill people. Yes. But to call all mentally ill people dangerous, to mistrust all of them and mistrust them as you are doing is not only dangerous to them, it is dangerous to you because it will breed a society that judges any slight deviation from the "norm" as a mental illness. By "deviation from the norm" I mean free thought. Yes. You will be called mentally ill for showing emotion or free thought. What you do now echoes and remember that echoes bounce back. Related to what I highlighted.... We are not talking about the "lightweight" cases here, ....were are talking about MENTALLY ILL PEOPLE. They used to lock them up for a reason. ...and they were usually good reasons. |

Point 2, they look like they are attached to her socks, not feet. There's more to this, maybe parents wanted her to have cute but easy-to-remove shoes for "school." . Sometimes parents are swayed by looks and not utility. They probably have a no-shoes policy or different shoes policy at home, most of my students were nicely dressed up for school, made it hard to restroom them, etc. I hope they all work it out. I agree with above posters, we need to look at the way we try to deal with special needs and mental needs people. The system currently in place is not logical sometimes. Many special needs kids are quite dangerous, of course they can't help that they have trouble with self-control mechanisms. Still, others should certainly be protected from injury. BTW, thrown shoes in face are indeed quite common. <10 yr. |

They used to lock them up for a reason. ...and they were usually good reasons. They we're locked up before the advent of Thorazine and slowly released because of the drugs. Mentally ill have very little deviation from "sound" minds when it comes to being dangerous especially with proper treatment. A lot of people were locked up simply because they couldn't take care of themselves which is a criteria for being admitted into a psych ward. So much to an extent when I was inpatient there was an old lady there who seemed perfectly normal. They put here there because some fucked up family shit where they wanted her money quickly by moving her into a retirement home, because she fell. |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 18850150 United States 02/19/2013 12:53 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Many years ago I highly suspected my autistic son was being abused by his public school teacher. I asked for my son to be transferred to another school. They refused. I called in the Feds... I knew the Feds would do nothing more than investigate. But that was enough to scare the teacher and the school [who was protecting her.] My son was immediately transferred to much better school. . |
