Re: Coffee Klatch
Things have changed so much over the last years.

For example, I grew my first tomato this summer

:firsttomato:

And zucchinis and yellow squash and salsa peppers :)
 Quoting: ~Sloane~

We're renting, so I can't have a real garden. I decided to do what my dad used to do. He had a few 5 gal. buckets and would plant a couple of tomato plants and a couple of zucchini. I did everything he did,, but mine aren't doing so well. One zucchini is dying and one watermelon is too. Then, something ate the whole bottom off my first tomato last night. Probably one of the sneaky squirrels. They are mad because we got a metal baffle to put on the bird feeder pole and they can't get to the feeders anymore.

Mine is not a real garden either, I have everything in four planter pots.

And it's so easy! And every day I have enough kale for a smoothie - only three plants and they just keep blooming.

I really must have brown thumb. The only place I could grow anything was in the Netherlands. It's a plant heaven there. Even the plants I wanted to die, wouldn't.

Hi Everyone!!! Nines you are always the optimist! Sloane, good to see you, and TB the only thing this year that has not been good for me is basil. For some reason it just doesnt like Florida this year. I am on my third plant. The first one went where they always go and promptly died. Second one was in the garden we shall not speak about, and now I have a third one in a pot that something was chewing on outside, so I moved it into my screened patio. We will see if this one makes it.

My pool would be lovely but there has been rain almost all day every day for the past nine days. Sunshowers but still rain.

My state is beyond red at this point, do they have a black?1dunno1

Nines, I did the same thing. I cant get used to the reverse scroll. madatcomp

Part of the problem is, we haven't gotten any decent rain in a couple of weeks. It comes right up to a couple of blocks from us and then goes around. I mean really! How rude! LOL

Awww, how disappointing that some sucker ate the bottom of your tomato. It can't be bad if you HAD a tomato, so you are doing better than you think. And some little critter had a gourmet feast from it.

If it was in a bucket and eaten from the bottom, you think it could be a groundhog? Hard to say I guess with so many things liking them. Never saw a squirrel eat one from the bottom though.

I'm doing mine in buckets this year too, and my Early Wonder started ripening, and I watered it, then it poured rain, so it split in a couple places. Have more green ones, but the split one will still taste good even though it's not the belle of the ball.

Have one of my green Kelloggs Breakfast tomatoes waiting for mod approval. Got the pic tonight so it's not great, but it's something. It's easy to be disappointed in gardening, and hope you won't be. It'll all work out, you'll see.

Oh, I'm not giving up! This tomato is in one of those raised planter dealies. I got the last one at Sam's last spring. That's why I think it was a squirrel. They've been getting on the porch. Missy, my old kitt from Texas, guards the kitchen door so they won't get her...I mean get in the house!

It could be where I bought them. The one that got eaten is a white tomato, no name. The others, in buckets are a purple German heritage. Two out of three are doing fine. The zuchinis and personal melons weren't named either. The German ones, I got from Home Depot. They doing fine even with the split stem from the wind. The other plants I got from a local place. We'll see. I still have plenty of shredded zuchini in the freezer from last year.

"Do they have a black?", "The garden we should not speak about". BWAAAHAHAHA. You really need to write humor. The best humor stems from frustration.

Optimism? That's very kind of you to say, but it's easier to be optimistic when someone else is dealing with the problem.

For those kind enough to share the problems, it uplifts someone else who may have the same or other problem, so even through the problem, you are helping. win/win. 8)

The bright side of the pool and rain. It's not oozing green slime yet...is it? cheers

I missed the video.

I have to have humor or I would be depressed. My mom is having mental decline big time.

I have finally got her to agree to see a neurologist, or at least that was yesterday. She probably forgot by today. I am going to look up a good one and just make an appt. Getting her there might be a whole other story.

She is going up to the cabin for a month next week but I have that covered. The lady who cleans and manages it is going to be checking in on her.

Yesterday she went to the hospital and told them she had been drugged at the restaurant she had lunch in. Posted it on FB and everything using the restaurant name. Hopefully they dont sue her for that.

She has been messing with her meds because she doesnt like meds, but these are heart meds she has been on for 7 yrs already and now she says they make her forget things and decides to cut back.

The first question I asked her was did you take your meds and she said she weened herself off them as of the day before!

She is giving me a run for my money. I am trying to get her to move closer, but one day she is all in with that and the next she isnt.

I'm sure this next chapter in my life can keep you all rolling with laughter for a few years. "The MOM chronicles"

Oh, hon. I won't be laughing too much. I was down that road with my mom and now we get part 2 with mil. We knew my mom was having problems with memory before dad died. We just didn't know how bad. She hung on hard until he died and went downhill fast. I had a hard time getting my brother to see it. She was really good at hiding it for awhile. The really fun fact of her side of the family is this...EVERY single person, except one, on my grampa's side of the family has died with dementia so far. There are 2 of mom's cousins still alive and I don't know what will happen with them. The one that didn't die with dementia died from a heart attack when he was in his 40's. We know it goes back as far as my great grandmother. Boy, do I have stories.

My mil is still ok, with just little things. Her family has dementia history too, but not as far back as mine. In her case, I really think it's more about this damn lockdown and her not having the same level of human contact as before. She has a small group of friends that would get together twice a week to play cards. They would go to special concerts and plays at the theater, too. She was very busy socially. Now she is a fall risk. The last time she fell was outside on the steps of the deck. She was there for about 45 minutes before the neighbors found her. She does have a fall alarm, but she forgets to wear it sometimes. She wasn't wearing it that day. She isn't driving now. The dr. said no and we agree for now. It could change.

So...yeah. Is what it is. I have a few little problems myself.

Post away, hon. Been there, done that and if it helps anyone, I'm glad to share and listen.

Awwww Flav. Sorry. The best humor might come from frustration, but some frustration has to be years old before it can begin to be humorous. It probably isn't and won't be funny to you for a long while and we surely won't be laughing.

The Mom Chronicles though, could become a best seller. So many people now dealing with it. My neighbor has recently been diagnosed with dementia. He's late 50's or early 60 and been living with it for a year now.

His main problem that his wife has shared is getting lost. Either the cops bring him home, call the family to come get him, or they drive around looking for him when he disappears. Hoping for his family's sake that his memory for people doesn't go because he has many guns and uses them often.

Thank you for sharing this part of your life with us. Know that you will be in our thoughts, and always in our hearts.

(If you want the deleted video, go to youtube and in the search bar type in "wearing a mask and nothing else") He is always covered. Barely.

Re: Coffee Klatch
TB funny you mention going down hill after your dad passed. That is what I think happened to my mom.

She has always had adhd and been one of those people that had a busy day, every day. When her husband of 30 yrs got alzheimers a few years ago, she kept him home until it was impossible to do so. Then she put him in an ALF where he was for a few years until his passing. At first, all of their busy life as a couple dwindled because he stopped communicating.

I can only imagine how your friends slowly abandoning you must feel. She grew depressed and lonely because she couldnt leave him alone. Mom made new friends by opening an airbnb, that way she could be home and still have friends around. She is one of those people who "never met a stranger".

It worked out well for her, so well that when she finally put him in an ALF she expanded her airbnb to all her extra bedrooms. She made 40 grand last yr from airbnb.

He passed in February, one day shy of their 35th anniversary. She felt sad and relief at the same time.

This was right about the time Coronavirus was making a debut and she shut down her airbnb temporarily due to the virus. She does still see friends that she knows are safe here and there, but the 45 day lockdown has been difficult for her and of course many of her friends are still not socializing.

Because she was always so busy with airbnb, I did not see or talk to her much then, but now I am talking with her all the time, so I am not sure if I am only noticing now or it has been going on for a while. When we did talk previously it was about her life or the kids etc.. it wasnt about her bills and other important things we talk about now. Her memory loss seems to be short term only at the moment and I know that is how it starts. She is going from trusting total strangers, to being paranoid.

Re: Coffee Klatch
Wow! That's almost exactly what my mom and dad went through. Dad couldn't walk, he kept falling, so mom had to stay home or get my brother to stay for a few hours. She was very active in an organization that I won't name. They go nuts here about them. She would go different places with a couple of friends that were members, too. She stopped when dad got worse. She said it was that, but I don't think it was all that anymore. She was VERY good at hiding what was going on.

How they handle their meds is something to be a hawk about. Mom only took a couple, but she would forget to take them or take them too often. I started out writing day or nighttime on them. That worked for about 2 weeks. Then I got her a pill box. That only kind of worked. Mom was what they call a sundowner. They told me that's why she went to bed when it got dark. The problem was she'd get up, get dressed about 1 am or soo, thinking it was morning. She'd take her morning pills and go back to sleep. Then, when she'd get back up in the morning she'd look for them in the box and panic or get mad when they weren't there. She'd call me and chew me out on side and down the other. She all but said my brother and I were trying to make her crazy. It took a long time for her to understand what was happening. I'm not sure she really did, she just gave up. Thankfully, she wasn't on anything that would hurt her if she took it twice or skipped every other day.

There's a ton more, but this is already a wall of text so I'll stop for now.

Flav, the best advice I can give you is just love your mom fiercely. Dementia patients can live a very long time and still be "gone". Take advantage of the time you have with her NOW. You'll be glad you did.

I do try to spend time with her but she lives over an hour away. When we make plans she usually forgets or bails on me if something more fun comes up.

I dont go to our planned meeting place or her house if she doesnt answer her phone in the morning because every time I have she has stood me up. Probably not intentionally but still thats a wasted half day if I drive up there and she isnt home.

I know. I used to make a 2hour round trip to my mom's 2-3 times a week. The only difference is my mom wasn't driving by then. She wasn't strong enough to handle her SUV. Sometimes it did feel like wasted time. Especially when she was in a mood and didn't want to talk or let me do anything. Hang in there, kiddo. You can vent to me anytime you want. Guys, I don't know about y'all, but I'm just done with all of this. It feels like it's never going to end. My grandbabies are growing up and we don't get to see them. I asked my oldest son what size to get the girls and the youngest is in a 10 now. She's that tall and she's just going into kindergarten this year. The little conversations on the phone or on facetime is just not enough anymore.

We took supper and some groceries to my mil's tonight. Dementia is creeping in on her. She's home by herself most of the time. I already went down this road with my mom for the first 3 years we were here until she passed away last year. At the end, she couldn't talk or acknowledge us in any way. My grampa, her dad, went the same way. I just can't do this. She's a sweet lady and this damn lockdown is messing her up. It's messing all of us up.

Tonight. I realized I have to prep for her, too, but I have to keep it here. Otherwise, she'll see it and not remember why it's there and give it away. I can't get her to do a weekly list. She always waits til she's out of something and then we have to go get it for her. She's not used to having enough groceries in the house to last for awhile. Going to stores that often is starting to get to me. We only go to 2, but then we have to go to another to get a prescription and another to get something else. Any other time I wouldn't care, but people here don't wear masks right or not at all. I hate shopping these days. We run in, get what we need and leave.

I'm at my wits end. I haven't seen anyone but my mil and my 2 bils. I turned down my brother's invitation for the 4th because everyone from my side of the family was going to be there. Every other year, that would've been a reason to go. This year, not so much. I love them all, but they all work around alot of people. I can't take that chance. If my kidneys decide to shut down again, I don't think I'll make it. And then who would take care of mil? The guys are so dense sometimes when it comes to their mom.

HELP! If it weren't for y'all, I'd go bonkers.

Awww TB, I'm sorry. That caregiver stress tests just how heavy a load you can carry. Know that you're not alone.
There are always things to deal with and once you do, a few more pop up to take their place. It seems never ending.

Does your mil get meals on wheels? If not, you might want to look into it. Would help in several ways. What looks to be a delicious meal would be delivered every day. She'd have contact with someone outside of family, someone is checking on her daily, and it's one less meal for you to worry about for her.

That was so nice of you guys to take her supper and groceries. She must have enjoyed that so much. Does she do any crafts, or computer things?

Have you considered grocery store online ordering and pickup, or delivery to help you limit your public contact? There are grocery stores and pharmacy's that can save you a world of stress and keep you safer. That's my main method now. Keeping the receipt is good for a good guesstimate of when someone is going to be needing another purchase. Like you, I'm not supposed to be out and about. Stayed home all winter, now it's become all summer. LOL.

How are your kidneys doing? Are you under a Dr. care right now? Feeling ok?....or as ok as can be expected.

It has to be a real burden to miss the grands. Makes you really think about long ago when people had multiple family homes. It's easy to think how that must have lightened many loads.

You're a real rainbow in your mil's world. Hope you see some in your own life real soon. Truly do with I could help you. Virtual hug is the best I can offer.Mhug

I'm better today. I'm sorry if I worried you. I had been in a weird place for a few days.

She used to be a crafter, back in the day. Not anymore. She's been watching her old movies on Turner Classic and puzzles. I've been scouring the stores that we go to to find new ones for her. I found a cool bird one at the birdseed store yesterday.

She still cooks and takes care of herself. She was falling awhile ago, but the doctors adjusted her meds and she is better.

I thought about doing delivery, but talking to my daughter and some other friends, they haven't had the best of luck with it. If it gets really bad, I don't know what we'll do. Cross that bridge when we get there.

I finally got a referral to a nephrologist. I'll have to call my pcm on Monday to get that started. My kidneys seem to be ok. I just wish I could get my sugar numbers back down to normal. They were until about 6 months ago. Don't know what changed. He's going to do another A1c when we go back in September and then we'll adjust.

I guess that's it for now. So far the kids are all good. Anyway, thanks for the hugs. I'll take whatever I can get! LOL

Re: Coffee Klatch
Sorry I was out of the loop, I was prepping the yard and house in case the hurricane hit here. It looks like it may, but I think it will be more of a water event for us since we are already saturated and our daily storms are flooding yards.

I am about 20 directly west of Cape Canaveral, so I am keeping an eye on this one.

TB I know you said your MIL cooks still but one thing I started doing several yrs ago for my grandmother, (yes I still have her and she is 102!) is when I make dinner for my family I make her frozen plates, like tv dinners. She doesnt eat much and sometimes leftovers will make two plates.

It started a few years ago when her arthritis in her back got really bad and she cant do much of anything for any period of time. We were sitting and she told me that everything is such a chore because to cook dinner, she will get to the kitchen and peel potatoes and have to sit. Then she will go back to them and wash and cut them and turn them on to boil and then sit, you get the picture. Making dinner was a half day event for her but she likes to eat a full meal at dinner.

That year I made the frozen meals for her starting in September and kept them in my freezer until Christmas. That is what I gave her as a Christmas gift because I always struggle with what to get her, after all aside from a walmart giftcard, what does a 100+ lady really need???

Well she called me and told me how much she loved that gift. I thought she was just being kind but then my aunt and uncle both called me over the next few weeks and told me how granny just kept talking about that being such a help and best gift to her. Now she gets them for Christmas and her birthday, plus whenever I go up to see her. Maybe if you did that she wouldnt need as much stuff. Just load the freezer with precooked meals that just need heating. Our pharmacies now deliver for free since the covid outbreak so you should look into that too. That way you could just go see her for company and not have to get to so many stores.

My grand daughter is starting kindergarten as well, but she is a size 5-6 so holy moly your grand daughter IS tall!

First of all, stay safe and let us know how you are when you can.

You are SO organized, you scare me!LOL We do kind of do that. We always make extra of things we know she likes and take them over. My sil stocked her freezer with frozen dinners that she likes when she comes. We also bring her take out when we get it and we eat with her. It's really not any bother there. She only lives 5 minutes away. It's a great idea, though, and I'll remember it. We're supposed to have a La Nina winter, so it could be difficult to get over to her if we get a lot of snow. Thankfully, she has wonderful neighbors on both sides. They plow her out and bring her the mail in the winter and she gets some of the very best bbq!

I just have to figure out how to get her to do a weekly grocery list. She hasn't done that in years. Now, she just tells me when she runs out of something and of course, it's something that really can't wait. I'm probably not going to win that battle, but it won't be for lack of trying! LOL

I hope I didn't come across like she's a pain or something. She really is the best mil anyone could want. She's having a hard time adjusting, like we all are, but some of her friends are older than she is and she is a social butterfly. When we locked down, they were getting together at least, 2x a week to play cards. They had other things they did together monthly, too.

Anyway, I was just in a weird place for a few days. Ranting to you guys really helped. Y'all are the best! I've missed you!
