Harlem Shake is Based on the Ethiopian Dance "Eskista"
"Gangnam Style" is officially (finally, mercifully) over. Which means we need a new dancing craze/meme to fill its place. With that, may we introduce you to: The Harlem Shake.
The premise is simple: The videos are about 30 seconds long and set to "Harlem Shake" by New York deejay Baauer. For the first 15 seconds, one person dances (or just humps the air) while everyone else in the room acts normal. Then, the beat drops and all hell breaks loose.

Wikipedia
Harlem shake
The Harlem shake, originally called the albee in Harlem, is a dance that started in 1981. The dance became mainstream in 2001 when G-Dep featured the Harlem shake in his music video Let's Get It. It has its history from an North-East African or Ethiopian (Abyssinian) dance called "Eskista" and was allegedly started in Harlem by a man named Al B. Its ancient form "Eskista" is still used in Ethiopia today

Thank you very much.:) This dance is very old and populair in Ethiopia. Young and old do this dance. I always loved this dance and suddenly it became an internet hit.Never knew that would happen, but recently I imagined that this dance would be famous one day and it would compete with famous Gangstam Style dance Asia.

Now the world has a new universal dance.

Wether or not I like it (eh gangham style) dance and music are to be respected. Just as other types of cultural expression should be as well. This dance is so fun! And to learn about the background was awesome. Thanks for posting!

True. The last time i danced on Eskista was last year with familY and Friends. I Saw white people dancing on Eskita and it was fun. It was an Ethiopian celebration party and Ethiopian music was playd so I had to do Ethipian dance. Harlem shake was not a hit big then but Gangham Style was. Suddenly I had a wild imagination That one day the whole World will do this dance!! And this day Would come sooner then I think!! hf
