I wish it did not double or triple the chances of developing mental illness.

Thank you for mentioning that.

If I may politely offer my theory on cannabis use and schizophrenia. This is just a theory.

The most convincing study establishing a link between cannabis use and the later development of schizophrenic symptoms was done on Swedish Soldiers.

[link to bjp.rcpsych.org]

Results On an individual level, cannabis use confers an overall twofold increase in the relative risk for later schizophrenia. At the population level, elimination of cannabis use would reduce the incidence of schizophrenia by approximately 8%, assuming a causal relationship. Cannabis use appears to be neither a sufficient nor a necessary cause for psychosis. It is a component cause, part of a complex constellation of factors leading to psychosis.
Conclusions: Cases of psychotic disorder could be prevented by discouraging cannabis use among vulnerable youths. Research is needed to understand the mechanisms by which cannabis causes psychosis

Folks in that part of the world have a lot of celiac disease. Swedes, Danes...

People with celiac disease are more prone to schizophrenia. This is debatable, oddly for many of the same reasons the cannabis study is debatable)

One large study of 7,997 Danish citizens (Eaton et al, 2004) who were admitted to health facilities with a diagnosis of schizophrenia between 1981 and 1998, found that four patients and eight parents of patients were being treated for celiac disease symptoms. The authors calculated an incidence of 1.5 cases of celiac disease per 1000 people in this population, as compared to a 0.5 incidence of celiac disease in the control population. Based on this data, the authors suggested a 3-fold increased risk of schizophrenia symptoms in an individual with celiac disease, over that of an individual in the general population (relative risk for general population is 1%).The authors calculated an incidence of 1.5 cases of celiac disease per 1000 people in this population, as compared to a 0.5 incidence of celiac disease in the control population. People with celiac disease have significant changes in their endocannabinoid system which may predispose them to self medicate with cannabis, in much the same way people with ulcerative colitis are predisposed to self medicate with nicotine*.

The cannabinoid receptor type 2 Q63R variant increases the risk of celiac disease: implication for a novel molecular biomarker and future therapeutic intervention.

The endocannabinoid system is upregulated in both human inflammatory bowel diseases and experimental models of colitis. In this study, we investigated whether this upregulation is a marker also of celiac disease-induced atrophy(snip)Thus, intestinal endocannabinoid levels peak with atrophy and regress with remission in both celiac patients and methotrexate-treated rats. The latter might be used as a model to study the role of the endocannabinoid system in celiac disease.

Celiac disease is on the rise. Are we blaming cannabis, when we should be blaming wheat?

Research studies in the United States and Europe show that celiac disease is significantly more common now than it was a few generations ago. Recent research by Joseph Murray, M.D., professor of medicine at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN, and colleagues shows that this shift reflects an actual increase in prevalence, not merely a new awareness of the disease and more accurate diagnostic tools. Murray and colleagues’ research—reported briefly in the Spring/Summer 2009 issue of Celiac Disease News—compared blood samples collected 50 years ago from more than 9,000 young adults, mostly men, at Warren Air Force Base in Wyoming with current samples from age-matched men. The investigators found that celiac disease is four times more common today than a half-century ago

I would like to see the Swedish soldiers who developed schizophrenia after using cannabis to be screened for celiac.

I would also be interested to find out if those schizophrenic cannabis using soldiers who were celiac went on to develop intestinal lymphoma secondary to celiac as they aged.

You might want to get checked for dementia then... Our conversation ended there. Light up another one. Only a chemist would understand the figures I would present your one man jury.

The conversation ended because you cannot provide any evidence for your grossly incorrect assertion... See my post above this....

U.N. estimated use was at 4% in 2004.... You claim 75-80% now in 2013... You are uninformed....

read labels and look words up. Clearly my stats were correct. I did not say that People were willingly useing it. :)
BTW I read you un offensive remarks on "the point of no return" why were you rude to me?
You said on that site that you would like to live next to an Indian wise man. You are polar in your moods, my friend, and need watching your self. Another important feature is that since I HAVE lived among the Indians, I can say your Rudeness over shadows any desire you have to be "wise".

there is no way to be polite in the face such outright stupidity, or else, if not stupidity.
