I was once pulled away from a store front by a strong feeling to move. . . I turned from a glass window when within seconds a truck came through the glass. . . shards sprayed all over the area. . . I should have been shredded but was never even cut . . . the driver and passenger was severely injured. . .

When is intuition and speculation fruitful?? A dilemma in a scientific age . . .

I know that intuition and speculation seem anathema some places ;however, to me a reasonable dose of speculation and intuition are essential for proper living . . . IMO a life devoid of following a hunch or an impulsive whim or informed guess is essential for happiness and in some cases even survival . . .

I was used as a disinterested third party investigator and inspector throughout my career . . . the funny thing is many times what turned out to be my most accurate and useful findings were not based solely on fact but a sense of, or intuition of, the state of reality. Maybe the brain simply weighs the preponderance of physical data observed and other experiences (which are sometimes below a conscious threshold) and crunches out the best approximation of reality without even consciously understanding how it was arrived.

Here's an interesting article in the New York Times, entitled "In Battle, Hunches Prove to Be Valuable." The theme is how the neurosciences are beginning to take soldiers' intuitions seriously, and for very pragmatic reasons: "Everyone has hunches — about friends’ motives, about the stock market, about when to fold a hand of poker and when to hold it. But United States troops are now at the center of a large effort to understand how it is that in a life-or-death situation, some people’s brains can sense danger and act on it well before others’ do."

The United States Navy has started a program to investigate how members of the military can be trained to improve their “sixth sense,” or intuitive ability, during combat and other missions.
The idea for the project comes in large part from the testimony of troops in Iraq and Afghanistan who have reported an unexplained feeling of danger just before they encountered an enemy attack or ran into an improvised explosive device, Navy scientists said.
“Research in human pattern recognition and decision-making suggest that there is a ‘sixth sense’ through which humans can detect and act on unique patterns without consciously and intentionally analyzing them,” the Office of Naval Research said in an announcement late last month. The scientists managing the program — which the the naval research office is calling “revolutionary” — commonly refer to this mysterious perception as feeling one’s “Spidey sense” tingling, after the intuitive power of Spiderman.

yes in traffic situations

Could you share any experiences????

So intuition is possibly and ultimately based upon hard data . . . but its collection and inclusion into ones decision algorithm is subliminal and many times inexplicable.

Bottom line, I learned to trust my intuition and was rewarded richly for doing so . . . simple coincidence or just probability being my friend ??. . . I tend to think I was collecting information and weighing it without my conscious faculties being aware . . .

My daughter just reminded me how often I would be flying down the road speeding, and out of the blue make the comment " I better slow down" only to crest a hill and radar would be set up. I didn't think about it really. But she brought it up saying it happened often and she thought I had some special powers..lol

"Two of my closest friends invited me to join them on a trip to Las Vegas. They were to pay for the hotel, food, gas, etc.  All I had to do was show up for the fun.  Only problem was, the day that they were to pick me up, I had a unrelenting feeling that I should not go. And I could not explain it.  I just knew that I should not go.

It wasn’t until the next day that I learned that my friends were in a terrible three-car accident and one of them did not make it out alive. "

Interesting. . . I have had similar events. . .

"My Pop Pop accidentally left his ignition running in his car, one night when we came home from dinner. You see he has one of those keyless cars that is virtually silent, and probable due to the heavy winds and rain that night, none of us noticed that the engine was still running.
Needless to say, the carbon monoxide needed a place to go, so up it seeped into the room that I was sleeping in.  I smelled something that I thought might be gas before I went to bed, but I wasn’t completely sure. I sniffed all over the room and came to the conclusion that the radiator wasn’t working right and I somehow convinced myself that it would magically correct itself.
So I cracked the window to entertain the thought in my head that said, if it is gas, I might die in my sleep. The other two options that I came up with at the time were, to move into the middle bedroom or to wake up my Pop Pop. It turns out that had I chosen option number three and awakened my Pop Pop, he probably would have called 911, therefore saving me from what was fated to occur.
Having chosen to stay in my bed and not take action on my suspicions, I proceeded to breathe in the carbon monoxide from 10 p.m. until 5 a.m. at which point, I was miraculously awakened by an inner voice which said, go to the bathroom."

"He explained himself and mum were watching tv and my photo fell from the cabinet and broke into pieces and my mum said she felt i was in trouble and to go to me. amazing thing is my mum directed my dads car straight to the location i was stuck and my mum has got no sense of direction and i was trail riding not at the usual track which was about 10 miles away"

There was a instance I cannot explain, here goes...

I had been recovering from surgery, and the doc had put me on heavy doses of sleeping meds. It was 11:00 pm and I had taken them 30 min prior.
At 11:00 I recieved a call from my mother that she had just found her husband dead at home.

Needless to say I couldn't drive, I was so groggy I had my daughter call the neighbor to see if she could take us. She agreed.
It was terribly foggy, I remember that. You couldn't see a thing in front of you. My young daughter in the backseat, friend driving I just kept nodding in the front seat.

As I nodded, eyes closed I could see clearly a herd of deer in the road. I lifted my head and blurted "DEER"

It scared my friend and she slowed, still seeing nothing but a wall of fog. I opened my eyes and that's all I saw as well.
She was startled so bad by my outburst, the car was now moving at a crawl.

Low and behold, within seconds...through the fog, we start to see the images of deer forming. Several huddled in the road.

How I knew that, or even saw that with my eyes closed still amazes me, my friend and daughter.

The secretory activity of the pineal gland is only partially understood. Historically, its location deep in the brain suggested to philosophers that it possessed particular importance. This combination led to its being a "mystery" gland with myth, superstition and occult theories surrounding its perceived functions.

This reliance upon a subjective feeling seemed to be more prevalent when the complexity of the problem/s being investigated were the most complex or even overwhelming. With an increase in complexity came a greater reliance on subjectivity and lower desire or need for objectivity.

Maybe when our conscious cognitive pathways are overwhelmed by too much input and analytical stimulation, one's offline supercomputer kicks in like a backup generator in a power outage . . . efficiently running analysis in background mode and once the computations are complete the answer is supplied . . . but since its existence seems detached from a conscious process we believe it to be subjective and intuitive when it is really objectively based as well . . .

My intuition tells me this is right;) Our brains somehow sort through the huge volume of data and make predictions based on likelyhoods and calculations that are too complex for us to visualize in a linear fashion. This need not be certain calculations that determine particular outcomes, but can simply be a weighing of possibilities and likelyhoods. A subconcious risk assessment, if you will.

I also feel that sometimes people can sense intent. It's almost like strong intent permeates the air. A soldier may see a corner of a home and sense danger because someone around the corner means them very ill will. I'm not much into this sort of thing. I prefer to deal with physical rationalities, but there may be a bit of a sixth sense at work.

I jumped out of a moving vehicle because I was "told to get out" about 3 minutes later the vehicle (that I was in) ran off the raod killing 2 of the 3 remaining occupants

Would seem to be logical and ultimately adaptive. . . . and seem mystical as well. . . However, I still think there are unknown input of information that is not explainable. . . .

Brain waves exist. . . we can measure them in the ELF range. . . so what if someone is able to transmit strong emotions and someone may well be able to receive and interpret them. . .

Driving one night with my oldest daughter, for no reason I just started telling her about one night her father and I had nearly hit a herd of cows on the highway. As I told the story I decided maybe I should slow down. Within a couple of minuets there amid the swirling fog was a herd of black cows.

Something call it intuition, or God's hand was with us that night.

Illogical poll.

If we go about our daily life making decisions, how do we KNOW we avoided something. I'd say yes, EVERY single person has used intuition to avoid things, they just don't know it.
