More info for you, OP (and anyone else who may be a target/victim of fraud). You can also report fraud at your State Attorney Generals office (some states have online filing).

After a quick search I found this website with basic contact info per state, or you could just search your state office yourself.

Oh you know what would be really fun?
Act like an idiot and make them walk you through how to turn on the computer. That could kill half an hour.

My FIL was getting those calls in the last year or so until my husband intervened. I'm sure they love targeting old folks hoping to catch them at a weak moment. Watch your parents and grandparents especially on this.

At least your solicitation calls have a live person on the other line.... I get these calls from an unknown number and as soon as I pick up I hear a cruise-liner horn/whistle go off and then I get an automated message from my 'Captain' telling me that I won free cruise tickets... I usually hang up before the remainder of the scam message finishes....
 Quoting: ANHEDONIC

I go OFF on those calls. I wait until they put a rep on board and immediately get super-agressive with him- "Mike? What's your last name, Mike? (repeat a few times), Mike I'm gonna need to talk to your supervisor because you've called a number on the do not call list, which is illegal."

They usually hang up.

yep, that scam is going around. friend of mine got locked out of her pc. phone rings at the same time. guy says he works for Microsoft and can fix it for $200. she called me instead. they even had safe mode locked with their password. I had to reload the hidden partition to fix it.

Omg, that's a really good idea.

I get at least 5 phone calls a day from marketers. Except most of them are computer-made calls that wait for a human voice before patching the call to them.

I got a similar call too, in passable English, even though I'm living in Sweden. Guess I must have surfed the same porn site as the OP or something...

Anyway, the guy was telling me there was a problem with my computer, and I was playing dumb, pretending to buy everything he said. He wanted me to download and install a remote desktop applications and run various commands in the console, so he could "assist" me better.

I pretended to obey like a good little sheep, but in the most stupid way possible. I forced him to guide me every step of the way, as if I was a complete retard.

I was unable to surf the net properly, I didn't know how to download files, I had no idea how to locate the downloaded file, I was unable to figure out how to install it, etc.

And when I finally pretended to have managed to install the application, I came up with various creative errors, as if the application refused to install properly on my computer. He attempted to guide me through these "errors", but to no avail.

I managed to waste 25 minutes of his time before he finally gave up on me. I hope he was making a long-distance call!

I fucking hate those. It's the same thing every time...

I'm busy shitting and the phone rings. Might be something important, so I stop in the middle of my business, do a hurried half-assed wipe job, and run to the phone, answering with my name.

No-one's there.

I wait, the seconds pass, and I realize it's one of those fucking computer calls.

Some sales bitch finally answers with her most chipper voice, asking if she have reached <My Name>.

I politely tell her that I just answered with my name.

She says "sorry, I must have missed it!"

I say "no you didn't, you have a computer calling people, and it is not connecting you until long after the victim has answered."

She mumbles something and tries to get back on track with "Anyway, I'm calling from <Company Name>, and..."

"No, you're not. You're sitting at a call center in a tele-marketing company", I interrupt.

At that point she usually tells me I'm being rude and hang up. And I finally get to finish my business.

The above is also my excuse for having skidmarks.

I have been getting these calls for the past 2 years (New Zealand) I got so sick of them, I did the same thing as you , pretended to be computer stupid. I started right from "turning my pc on" which I told him took a while because it was old lol.. then he told me to go to the start menu.. I asked him" where is that?" that took another 5 minutes .. I was laughing so much by the end of it.. I even went as far as asking him to please hold because someone was at my door... all the while thanking him for helping me, so he would stay on the line ... i put the phone down and picked it up 10 minutes later.. he was still on line... THEN WHAT REALLY PISSES THEM OFF.. after playing with them for a while.. ask HOW you got the virus, they will say from a website.. ask them if you need the internet to go to a website... THEN tell them, "OH I DONT HAVE THE INTERNET" lol...

Re: Beware of This Computer Scam! You Will Have Personal Information Stolen!
This has been happening since last year.

Happened at work to one of my colleagues. How they got hold of a private number we don't know.

This colleague who used to work for the Australian Police Force pretended to be a police officer and made up a story that the call was being recorded and tracked and that we knew who and where he was. lol
But the bizarre thing was that this guy in India didnt hang up straight away. In fact the conversation went on for at least another 20 mins. Man those guys are thick and stupid. They must be so drugged up or complete idiots.

Best thing to do is play mind games with them.
e;g; if they ask you to turn on your computer then say "ok, I have turned on my iPad" or "I have turned on my TV, now what" then use your creative imagination and go from there. lol e.g. if they ask for your IP address to gain access to your computer, just ask "so what channel should I be on to get that"... if you get the gist. Just stuff them around with stupid stuff like that.

Ask them for their mothers favourite curry recipe. Heheh

Ask them if they would like a free flight to your country and offer them some cash but ask them for their address, phone number etc so you can send them the airline ticket and the cash. They might just be stupid enough to give your their details.

Unfortunatly for me I was scammed by the windows guys for $249.00. It seemed that day my computor ran very slow, So I thought there may be a problem,
I let him in, he installed a virus or something, It ran even slower but I could live with it.
A few months went by, now all kinds of problems, So I contact the guy, he wants another $249.00 for a thing called a mother sheet. I new It was a scam at this time.

Told the bank about it to try and get my money back, but it was to late, after three months they couldnt do anything. They oporate is out of Hawai according my bank statement. I could have reported it to the policeround here for a report then would go to the State attornies office, but choose not to, live and learn.
Pretty Slick people, just hang up when you get these calls.
