NYPD spent one million hours arresting marijuana users
"The findings by the Drug Policy Alliance, which favors the decriminalization of the substance, was done at the request of members of the city council and the state legislature.

It shows that between 2002 and 2012, with Mayor Michael Bloomberg at the helm of the metropolis, 439,056 people were arrested for the possession of marijuana. Eighty-five percent were young blacks and Latinos.

“That is the equivalent of having 31 police officers working eight hours a day, 365 days a year, for 11 years, making only marijuana possession arrests,” the group said, highlighting that during this time officers don’t devote themselves to dealing with other “serious crime.”

Fighting pot possession costs $75 million a year, the group said, noting that, over the eleven-year period, those arrested spent five million hours in detention.

“We cannot afford to continue arresting tens of thousands of youth every year for low-level marijuana possession,” said Alfredo Carrasquillo, civil rights organizer with VOCAL-NY.

The report was released as Governor Andrew Cuomo, a Democrat, and the state legislature are negotiating changes to the law on marijuana possession."

One of the many reasons I could never become a cop. I just couldn't rationalize it morally for me to be out arresting people for growing marjiuana when I should be out hunting murderers and rapists. Just one of the many pointless tasks our police are forced to endure (and other even more meaningless arrests) instead of actual real arrests of the criminals that are a threat to the people. No wonder the lines start to blur and corrupt cops are created; forced to arrest people for meaningless trivial offenses that may or may not be even morally wrong, day in and day out between the occasional actual REAL criminal arrest.

Too pessimistic?

Had a college instructor once who was serving as a police chief of a nearby town/municipality and he pretty much told our class of 250 students that he thought arresting people for marijuana was a waste of time/resources and called it quote "stupid". Said when he served on patrol he would just have individuals toss their stash down a gutter and let them be on their way.... The guy scored major points with his students that day, lol.

Why does this insanity still prevail? Why ?
Such hypocrisy too, when the majority of the law enforcers as well as the law makers, ALSO enjoy the substance that they have outlawed and are incarcerating others for....
this unjust prison culture must end.

On Wednesday nights you can watch the Discovery channel show Weed Country whereby they show a S.W.A.T. Team in Mendocino County, CA with full camo gear & tactical equipment/weapons parading through the forest like they're hunting charlie. Only thing is they're actually hunting marijuana plants and worried about stumbling upon armed growers - but the growers are armed not to fight the police but in case they are attacked/robbed by indiviuals looking to pilfer/loot their gardens.... Then they interview the S.W.A.T. guys on camera and they act like they're out there making the world a better place and saving lives lol.... Absolutely ridiculous....

what a good review
looks like we are all seeing the reality of what is and isn't value for money and how current drug policy isn't adding up

can i just add -think of the pension payments that have also been levied for all those man hours and how much that futile work is still going to cost tax payers in the bfuture
man hours spent ignoring higherlevels of organised crime while busting the minnows

wrong thinking=
waste of money

Our experience on the front lines of the “war on drugs” has led us to call for a repeal of prohibition and its replacement with a tight system of legalized regulation, which will effectively cripple the violent cartels and street dealers who control the current illegal market.

Unfortunately the police union(s) will get together and figure out how many jobs and how much funding they will lose and collectively decide to vote/act against any drug law reform... Even though it's abundantly clear that the war on drugs is a massive failure and actually creates far more harm to our society then decriminalization and controlled legalization would.

What few people outside law enforcing agencies understand is that minor crime such as MJ consumption and other minor infringements of everyday regulation such trafic are often breached by serious repeat offenders. eg people with outstanding 1st instance warrants are often locked up because they were detected commiting minor offences. Often that is how they get serious sexual predators or armed robbers ect.

The American people should not the be the enemy.

If you think that all child molesters smell like weed, that means that you will miss the molester who smells like scotch and is wearing the Brooks Brothers suit, or the vestements,or the scrubs, or the fireman's coat because you have trained youself to only see crime where you smell weed. Makes law enforcement very easy, that smell. And completely, tragically, wrong.

They used to think witches did not float. That was not a good test, either.

Table 5 shows that "marijuana only" marijuana users are only very slightly more likely to commit crimes than non-users. Tire original nine percentage point difference between users and non-users in committing four or more offenses has shrunk to only two percentage points (in fact, only one percentage point--we are comparing 24.4% with 25.5%, and the original 19 percentage point difference between users and non-users in committing no offenses has been reduced to 13 percentage points. In fact, the "marijuana only" user is far more similar to the non-user in number of offenses committed than he is to the user of marijuana plus two or more other drugs

And reproducing more effectively!

[link to www.salem-news.com]

A total of 2,964 babies were drug-tested at birth to see if they were positive for drugs - cocaine, opioids or cannabis were studied. 44% of the infants tested positive for all varieties of drugs, including the 3 being studied. During the first two years of their lives, 44 babies from the original group died. Since statistics are a drag to slog through, I'll cut right to the chase - the deaths per thousand live births - the numbers tell the story.

"No drugs at birth" deaths....... 15.7 deaths per 1000 live births

"Cocaine positive" deaths.......17.7 deaths per 1000 live births

"Opiate positive" deaths.......18.4 deaths per 1000 live births

"Cannabis positive" deaths.... 8.9 deaths per 1000 live births [5]

The cocaine and opiate babies have a higher death rate than the "No drugs" babies - that was to be expected. But look at the "cannabis" babies! Having extra cannabinoids in their bodies at birth (and likely later, from 2nd-hand exposure, or breast milk) seems to have some sort of a protective effect. The "cannabis" infants have a mortality rate almost half of what the "No drugs" infants have
