NightWatch

For the night of 20 March 2013

North Korea: On 21 March at 0930 local time, the Korean Central Broadcasting Station made the following unscheduled announcement:

"We inform all soldiers and residents!

"This is an air raid warning. This is an air raid warning. This is an air raid warning. Military units and units of all levels must quickly take measures to prevent damage from the enemy's air strikes."

"This is an air raid warning. This is an air raid warning. This is an air raid warning. Military units and units of all levels must quickly take measures to prevent damage from the enemy's air strikes. This is the Korean People's Army Broadcasting Station."

At 1028 local time the Korean Central Broadcasting Station carried a second unscheduled announcement:

"This is the Korean People's Army Broadcasting Station. We inform all residents and soldiers: The air raid warning is lifted. The air raid warning is lifted. The air raid warning is lifted."

Comment: According to defectors queried by the Daily NK, this was the first use of the public radio system for broadcasting an air raid warning. It was a test because it was too brief to be a civil defense evacuation drill. In large cities they take up to a full day. This is significant because air raid warnings are never broadcast. This was probably a no-notice drill in response to the US announcement about B-52s operating over South Korea.

Air raid warnings were more common in the 1990s, but all were sent via the "Third Broadcast" which is a cable radio system, only accessible in North Korea. The Korean People's Army Broadcasting Station only has been known to use the Third Broadcast.

The use of a nationwide radio broadcast implies the North's leaders expect they will need such a system at a time when people would be away from their homes, in fields, on the street or in public conveyances. They expect the population to respond swiftly according to plan without advance warning. That is uncommonly realistic preparation. The B-52 announcement had effect.

North Korean drones. The Korean Central News Agency reported on 20 March that North Korea launched a drone attack on a simulated South Korean target. The press item touted that Kim Jong Un personally supervised the operation. The drone strike successfully shot down a target mimicking a South Korean cruise missile.

Comment: It is not clear just what transpired in the exercise, whether a drone actually flew. However, South Korean news sources in February 2012 reported North Korea had acquired older US drones, MQM-107D Streaker target drones built by Raytheon, from a Middle Eastern country. South Korea's Yonhap reported they possibly came from Syria. Photos of the drone are available on the Internet.

The North Koreans are extremely good at tinkering with older systems and finding value in materials that would end up on the cutting room floor in the US. Their entire missile program evolved from tinkering with obsolescent systems. They certainly have the science to boost the performance and capabilities of a target drone.

The North Korean news report disclosed information about the status of a fairly new weapons project. They are aware of the threat from Allied cruise missiles and have been working to counter them and probably build their own for over a year.

Did the Iranians Assist North Korea with Their Cyberattack?

Considering the similarities between the alleged Iranian cyberattacks on various US banks and businesses I would not be surprised if they assisted the North Koreans on their latest cyberattack on South Korea:

Cyberattacks on three South Korean TV stations and two banks disrupted computer networks and halted ATM services temporarily on Wednesday, sending a tremor through that nation’s heavily Internet-dependent economy and raising questions about whether the attack was carried out by a nation-state or a hacker group.

Fingers were quickly pointed at North Korea as a likely suspect – especially given its protests last week that South Korea and the US were behind a two-day temporary shutdown of its Internet. Longstanding reports suggest that the North is training cadres of elite hackers.

Senior South Korean government officials withheld judgment while the matter is being investigated. But cybersecurity experts said the attacks, which occurred at around 2 p.m. local time, were synchronized and appear to have been the result of malicious software – a crude cyberweapon planted inside the computer networks of the banks and TV stations.

The malicious software was a “wiper” program that deletes computer files en masse – the type of cyberweapon used to attack Saudi Aramco in August 2012, damaging or wrecking 30,000 work stations in the giant oil company’s network.

To plant that kind of cyberweapon in multiple South Korean networks, the attackers had to have been inside the networks for some period. That differentiates these attacks from the attacks now going on against US banks, which flood websites with data and make web services freeze up.

Adding confusion, some South Korean computers were reported to have shown the image of a skull and a graphic claiming the attack was conducted by a group called the “Whois Team.” But that display may say little about who was behind the attack, cybersecurity experts say. More revealing is the apparent goal. [Christian Science Monitor]

You can read the rest at the link, but I would not be surprised if the North Koreans used some of their Chinboista allies in South Korea to launch the attacks in order to better cover their tracks.

It would please to Iran to trigger a war between Koreas. While USA and NATO would be busy there, free-time to attack Israel (and/or other countries).
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 8298598

That's crazy. Left alone, Iran isn't going to attack anyone. That's their history. Israel, on the other hand, has a history of agression against the whole world.

China demands our government disarm all citizens. Hmmmmm.....

then I hear Jerome Corsi say that dork is going to give China assets to pay off our debt to them. Kind of looks like we're becoming partners with the Chinese. No way will dork risk radiation drifting into China....

Re: China cuts off oil deliveries to North Korea
why would China want a war on the Korean Pennisula? It makes no sense because they know NK will lose and the US will be even closer to them. Unless, this is a show for China, knowing that provocting a war will give them an excuse to get involved and perhaps thinking they will beat the US and SK. IDK?

Japan, U.S. Drafting Plan to Defend Disputed Islands

Japan and the United States will draft a plan to counter any Chinese military action to seize disputed islands in the East China Sea.

A U.S. defense official in Washington said Wednesday that Japan's General Shigeru Iwasaki, the chief of staff of the Japanese Self Defense Forces Joint Staff, is meeting in Hawaii this week with the commander of the U.S. Pacific Command, Admiral Samuel Locklear, to discuss a plan to retake the islands, should China invade.

China reafirms will to safeguard islands' sovereignty

BEIJING, March 21 (Xinhua) -- Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei said Thursday that no outside pressure can shake the will and determination of the Chinese government and its people in defending national territorial sovereignty.

Hong made the comment in response to media reports that Japan and the United States have started mapping out joint operational plans over the Diaoyu Islands and the entire East China Sea.

"China is gravely concerned with relevant media reports," said Hong, reiterating that the Diaoyu Islands are China's inherent territory.

The Chinese government has the resolution and capability to safeguard national territorial sovereignty, said the spokesman.

IMO China wants N.K. to do something, that is why they are not supporting them "openly". I fear that once we focus our troops and attentions at N.K. then we have to face the possiblility that China and Russia may try to put the smack down on U.S. Soil. They see us a weak, undecisive and broke. They also thing that we are being disarmed "which is a big mistake for them to make".

Then again, who knows, it is hard to out "guess" them on what they are planning to do or will do out of anger/frusteration.

Its really anyones guess. The Stratfor, IMO, makes some very good educated guesses which seem very plausible.

NK gets the shit kicked out of them China can go in and claim control over Little baby Un. Getting them one step closer to an USA ally. Maybe Slowly China has a plan to gain control over all of the WORLD! (duh)
