I'm intrigues..just east of Mammoth Mountain- 'Mammoth Mountain was formed in a series of eruptions that ended 57,000 years ago. However, Mammoth still produces hazardous volcanic gases that kill trees and caused ski patroller fatalities in 2006.[5]' a lava dome [ link to en.wikipedia.org] that probably formed this: [ link to www.nps.gov] ' Until recently, it was thought to have formed about one million years ago. Current studies suggest that the Postpile was formed less than 100,000 years ago when a cooling lava flow cracked into multi-sided columns.' Quoting: Anonymous Coward 11995984 I live in Crowley Lake. Right smack dab in the middle of the caldera. We have been having at least 3-5 small quakes per day -and that's the ones we feel. It's all magma related -definitely percolating! I was on the mountain the day those patrollers died on the fumarole. It's right below Chair 3. Always spitting out sulfur fumes. Two things: I am glad I bought that purse and we will be incinerated before we even know what hits us.
