I have a buddy who is a mechanic in the marines and he was telling me a head gasket was blown on a MRAP and instead of spending $30 on a gasket and changing it they where told to pulled the engine out and put a new $150,000 in it. What your buddy didn't tell you is that field mechanics cannot do any in-depth repairs of defective engines other than change air filters and the like. They just ship the engine back to overhaul and pop in another rebuilt engine. That's SOP. Navy does the same thing except when on an aircraft carrier. Only then do they make repairs on jet engines, landing gear, etc. because they can't just pack the defective parts up and ship them to the overhauler. Why cant they perform those duties? Is it because their leaders said they couldn't? That's fucking stupid. Aircraft and vehicle engines are 2 completely different things. Jet engines turn tens if not hundreds of thousands of rpm's. Diesel and Gas engines in the military operate under 7000 rpm's. Therefore aircraft engines need more precision work, but if they are mechanics on gas and diesel vehicles and they cannot preform a simple task like changing a gasket then that's a problem.
