Loud boom shook ground in Topeka KS 10:45PM local time

So it just came out of nowhere? Could you get a direction on where the loud boom originated from?

The sound came from the west side of town and was definitely not fireworks.

I am near Kansas city Ks, Have you ever heard the term Seneca Guns?

Didn't someone from southern MO post about a boom earlier today?

Stay safe out there (I'm from KC originally) nothing is built for quakes.

I just looked the term up, and that may have something to do with this. I'm checking local news sites now but nothing is being reported out of the ordinary. There was a news report of a house fire many miles to the southwest of where I heard the noise and the report said the fire was out long before the noise occured, so that certainly wasn't it.

It doesn't always mean earthquake is eminent but something to think about, the area is due and there has been some recent activity that has not been publicized

Thanks, the seismoluminescence part is VERY interesting. This is thought to be the cause of spook lights around the world.

Possible explanation for the Joplin Spook lights.

That's exactly what thinking. I've heard nobody has seen the light since the 2011 tornado.

I found this thread interesting. I live in Iowa and my daughter-in-law and I were on the phone around 9:15pm Central time. She said all of the street lights went out for miles and not a minute later, I felt my house shake and my cat went crazy looking around. I read about the booms in Missouri too. Was wondering what was up. Interesting.

No and there hasn't been so much as a word in the local media about it.
