he landslide reportedly started around 4 a.m. Wednesday morning, and the ground is still moving.

"In consultation with the county engineer, we're in the process of evacuating 10 additional homes to the south of that location because of potential for additional landslide activity," says Chief Ed Hartin with Central Whidbey Fire and Rescue.

Homes evacuated after major landslide on Whidbey Island

COUPEVILLE, Wash. -- At least 17 homes have been evacuated after a major landslide overnight on Whidbey Island.

Island County Sheriff Mark Brown said no one was hurt, but one home was destroyed by mud and debris when the slide happened in an area near Alderwood Street and South Fircrest Avenue just after 4 a.m.

"It's a pretty massive slide," he said.

The part you guys are missing is that the plate is flexing due to the force of the collision along the Cascadia subsection zone. As it gets more bent, hills and bluffs on the either side of the bend will be more susceptible to slope failure or collapse. When the Cascadia quake eventually happens, this flexing will relax and cause the quake to be more intense than otherwise as all that flexed energy is released.

Yes. In the water thread about the drain, the OP noted that the lake level had dropped noticeably... but that now it had seemed to return to normal. Lake Whatcom is east of the Washington St Landslide.

One of two things happened. A quake took up the slack, but no one equated a quake with the landslide.

Option two is a slow slip event that relieved the stress.

The USGS has been studying the hell out of those over the years all up and down the Cascadia. Eventually, the slip is gonna lock, the crust will flex much like this time, and there will be a megathrust quake as it rebounds.

This is only on the news because it effects reidents and homes.

FACT: Everyday for MONTHS there are landslides closing the main rail line between Squamish BC and Seattle. Somtimes disrupting service up to 3 days.
