This is totally off-topic but... here is today's breaking news on the sutdown of a nuclear reactor in South Korea: Nuclear Event in South Korea on Thursday, 04 April, 2013 at 13:36 (01:36 PM) UTC. Description A nuclear reactor on South Korea's southeast coast was shut down Thursday afternoon, but the cause was not immediately known, plant operators said. No immediate threats of a radiation leak were detected, according to the Korea Hydro and Nuclear Power Co. The Gori Nuclear Power Plant, about 450 kilometers southeast of Seoul, halted operation at around 4:34 p.m., only hours after it resumed operation following a two-month maintenance that ended Wednesday. An investigation was underway to identify the cause for the shutdown, officials from the state-run power company said. The 950,000-kilowatt reactor began its commercial operation in April, 1986. The Gori Nuclear Power Plant also houses five other reactors. OK folks... let's all get back to discussing Fukushima. |

Looks like the whole Arctic ice sheet is on the move and breaking up early: March 22, 2013 video of Arctic ice breaking, cracks and on the move: [link to youtu.be] Paul Beckwith, climatologist studying abrupt climate change: "For the record; I do not think that any sea ice will survive this summer. An event unprecedented in human history is today, this very moment, transpiring in the Arctic Ocean. The cracks in the sea ice that I reported on my Sierra Club Canada blog and elsewhere over the last several days have spread and at this moment the entire sea ice sheet (or about 99% of it) covering the Arctic Ocean is on the move. Clockwise. The ice is thin, and slushy, and breaking apart." Beckwith goes on to say, "This is abrupt climate change in real-time. Humans have benefited greatly from a stable climate for the last 11,000 years or roughly 400 generations. Not any more. We now face an angry climate. One that we have poked in the eye with our fossil fuel stick and awakened. And now we must deal with the consequences. We must set aside our differences and prepare for what we can no longer avoid. And that is massive disruption to our civilizations." (from Part-time professor and climatologist Paul Beckwith) Record Methane in Arctic early March 2013: "Methane levels for this period are at record highs in the Barents and Norwegian Seas, i.e. the highest levels ever recorded by IASI, which is is short for Infrared Atmospheric Sounding Interferometer, a Fourier transform spectrometer on board the European EUMETSAT Metop satellite that has supplied data since 2007." [link to arctic-news.blogspot.co.uk] "This has the potential to release vast quantities of methane trapped by ice below the surface - billions of tonnes of methane. World-wide, peat bogs store at least two trillion tons of CO2. This is equivalent to a century of emissions from fossil fuels." Don't need to worry about what's incoming but rather what we are currently standing on. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 37798913 Portugal 04/10/2013 02:15 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Japanese authorities announced today that it will transfer urgently radioactive water from Fukushima nuclear plant for new reservoirs, after detecting a leak in the existing. Naomi Hirose, president of Tokyo Electric (TEPCO), said that contaminated water will be transferred from two underground tanks, three of which showed leakage to other surface, "as fast as possible" in principle until early June. "I still do not understand the cause of the leak. But we will strengthen monitoring activities, to prevent the water from flowing into the sea," Hirose said at a press conference in the Japanese capital. The nuclear recorded two years ago (March 2011) who is considered the worst nuclear accident since Chernobyl (1986), following a violent earthquake and tsunami. The leaks were detected in three of the seven underground reservoirs, since April 5, enclosing water was used to cool the reactors at Fukushima, contaminated by radioactive substances. Altogether, will be transferred to surface reservoirs 7,000 tons of water. Until the middle of May, will be built on the surface 38 new reservoirs, with a capacity of 19 tons. Also today, the Japanese nuclear regulator has published a new draft safety standards aimed at preventing the recurrence of accidents such as the 2011. These include the prohibition of building reactors near the graben, and extends the concept of seismic risk zone. Forcing the flight of hundreds of thousands of people and contaminating fertile agricultural land, the Fukushima disaster has increased opposition to nuclear power, which currently produces a third of the electricity Japanese. Currently, only two of the Japanese nuclear reactors are in operation. [link to sol.sapo.pt] |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 37858609 Portugal 04/11/2013 11:42 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Updated: Thursday, 11 April, 2013 at 03:10 UTC Description Tokyo Electric Power Co. must stop using sunken reservoirs to store radioactive water accumulating at the crippled Fukushima No. 1 nuclear plant once it has enough storage tanks, Economy, Trade and Industry Minister Toshimitsu Motegi said Wednesday. Three of the seven reservoirs, which are basically lined trenches with surface covers, have been found to be leaking radioactive water, including seawater, leading Tepco to consider transferring some of the contents to more reliable tanks above ground. The water was cycled through reactors 1, 2 and 3, which suffered core meltdowns in 2011, to keep the units cool to prevent further massive fallout. The utility has said it cannot empty all the sunken reservoirs currently in use because there is not enough alternative storage capacity on the site now. Tepco plans to install tanks that can hold 15,000 tons by mid-April. Motegi told a Diet committee that the radioactive water will be "swiftly" moved to tanks above ground and "after that, sunken reservoirs should not be used." The situation regarding radioactive water leaks has been worsening since Tepco first announced it earlier this month, with more sunken cisterns found with problems increasing. There is speculation there may have been flaws in the construction of the reservoirs. All were built by Maeda Corp. Tepco also said Wednesday that it confirmed a small amount of radioactive substances outside the water-containment lining sheets laid between reservoir No. 1, the latest one found with leaks, and the soil. Radioactive water leaks to soil have already been reported around reservoirs Nos. 2 and 3. The utility said it has detected 0.11 becquerel of radioactive substances per cubic centimeter of water in soil outside the three lining layers of reservoir No. 1. Radioactive water that escaped from that cistern may have seeped into the ground, according to Tepco. To boost oversight at the plant, which also recently saw the halt of its cooling system for spent-fuel pools, the Nuclear Regulation Authority said it will increase the number of on-site inspectors from eight to nine. The continued injections of water into reactors 1-3 is causing the massive accumulation of radioactive water. Water used to cool the damaged reactors is recycled as coolant after radioactive cesium and other substances have been removed in a processing facility. But the total amount of tainted water is rising because the existing water flow allows an influx of about 400 tons of groundwater a day. [link to hisz.rsoe.hu] |
