THEORY DISPROVING TIME TRAVEL
Last night i had an appifany (spelling!). Time travel will never happen! Think about it. Letīs say that in 1,000 years they create a time machine. Wouldnīt they travel back in time sometime over the last 2,000 years?! Personally, iīve never seen a man from the future. Therefore itīs my theory that time travel will never happen. Comments please!

Re: THEORY DISPROVING TIME TRAVEL
This is not exactly a new idea; obviously you donīt read much science fiction. Iīve never heard a good argument against it, though.

Re: THEORY DISPROVING TIME TRAVEL
Theories about time travel can be mind boggling. However, just becasue you believe you have never seen a person from the future in your time, does not mean it never did happe. There are probably many things in this world that you believe exist without ever seeing them, why are you applying such a rule against time travel?

Re: THEORY DISPROVING TIME TRAVEL
Iīve never met anyone from the future either. But I canīt think of a single reason why someone from the future would travel back in time to visit me.
I work at a dying KMart in a small town in a relatively uninteresting mid-west state. Itīs not likely that a time-traveller that has anything to share will pop around and share it with me.

Iīll just have to wait for the next

to show up on the internet.

Re: THEORY DISPROVING TIME TRAVEL
Well a personal belief I have is that if it were possible, then perhaps it is only possbile as an observation. That is, the past is in a read-only mode. A protective mechanism of the Universe to stop us screwing around with things and creating paradoxes all over the place.

However another reason may be, that you need huge amounts of power and incredibly advanced technology to do it. Perhaps if we actually make it to such a phase (without destroying oursevles) we collectivley as a race have much higher levels of comprehension and understanding and are able to regulate ourselves and not fall into the temptation to muck around with things. Or simialrly, because of the technical requirements, it is easy to monitor (we can detect a nuclear explosion at any point on the globe) a time trangression, or unauthorised time travel event, and it can be blocked or rectified quite easily.

My goodness, the more you think about it, the more reason you can begin to think of. And thatīs only thinking about one side of the story.

It sure is a fun concept.

Re: THEORY DISPROVING TIME TRAVEL
What if God were one of us, stranger on the bus, or what if a time traveller was one of us, just a stranger on the bus.

I often wonder if Jesus and his knowledge of the human body was a time traveller dropping hints, others as well, progress requires the impetus of one, may it be people who either have travelled to some future yet determined(Titor?) or one who is here and ripples forward and recieves visions.

Time travel is trancendent and will be overcome, once this barrior(veil) is lifted from man. I see the potential for travel but with that resopnsibility comes a responsibility to your ancestry, or you could be gone in a poof!

Scientists zero in on why time flows in one direction

It doesnīt disprove time travel, just time travel back in time.

Michael Moorcock wrote Tales from the End of Time which was about people far in the future who collected time travellers who were stuck and couldnīt go back.

Fun read.

Re: THEORY DISPROVING TIME TRAVEL
Maybe UFOīs are not from outer space but from the future.

Can anyone really say what a time traveller and/or timne machine would look like.

See Dr Who as an example. His time-machine was called the TARDIS and looked like a old british police box.

Dr Who also had 2 hearts and a long scarf. He was an alien from Gallifrey who looked human.

*** Thanks Ompha! Personally I do not think a "time travel machine" is all that necessary
for accomplishing time travel.

OP, of course your theory needs some development, however I agree with you. I still doubt space-time can be curved enough as to allow macroscopic bodies to go back in time.

Re: THEORY DISPROVING TIME TRAVEL
There is another form of time travel that often gets omitted. Itīs these "visions" of the future that change the present. For example, you get a bad feeling about something, and your hesitation ends up saving your life. Or you have a dream about a winning lottery number, whatever.

About "real physical" time travel, I still think it could happen, though obviously my mind canīt quite grasp the intricacies of how it would avoid the paradoxes.

Still, if no form of time travel is possible (not even in the form of premonitions), that would be really, really depressing since weīd then be stuck in a purely predictable cause & effect universe, and that would negate the whole concept of freewill.

The only thing freeing us from cause & effect slavery is the interaction between past/present/future, at least thatīs how I see it.

Re: THEORY DISPROVING TIME TRAVEL
Our perspective of Time travel is only one. Time is truly barely understood. Scientists have no idea what theyīre dealing with. You have to consider the possibilities of infinite Universes. Would it be truly traveling through time? or will time for you never change. Follow me here. Your mind judges Time to be seconds and minutes because you have been taught this. When you skip from one universe space/time to another, your sense of time never changes. Therefore you never traveled through time, for time does not exist. Only Now. But humanity has not yet learned to understand this. One day, I hope...or should I say, sometime now.

What is inside you is what truly knows īwhat time it isī. Your sense of change around you, even if it is from Universe to Universe, is only your perpective. Thus the works of the mind results.

Re: THEORY DISPROVING TIME TRAVEL
X, someone once described time to me as a wheel, and said we stand at the hub. Ie, we look forward and see the wheel turning, giving us the illusion of time moving, when in fact we are standing quite still. To "travel time", all we have to do is make the effort to turn our heads to another point on the wheel. Itīs all a matter of perception. If youīre really good, I suppose you could step off the wheel entirely and find another more interesting one...

I just found it interesting, because a lot of myths describe time as a wheel as well and I think thereīs more to myths than we think :P

īThe works of the mind..ī

We put labels on everything. The change of perspective can be Anything to us. Walk from inside to outside of your house. What do you call this? I am outside. Change of perspective. Change from what you see around you, to something totally different -- yet the same. What do you call that?

Answer: Time Travel. Just another label to change of perspective.

Re: THEORY DISPROVING TIME TRAVEL
Just to add a little more weirdness to this thread, I agree Omph :) The multiverse is probably real, but time and space are an illusion. Iīve actually had the impression sometimes that I am not moving at all, only my thoughts are. Time and space are just illusions I use so I donīt skip all over the place every instant.

For example, I would be thinking of a girl I wanted to meet from highschool because we never got to say goodbye and exchange addresses, and six months later we meet in an airport. One in a million chance at that. It did take some "time" and "space", but in reality, it was my thoughts that made the coincidence become manifest.

So if time AND space is illusory, then only our thoughts are real. And if only our thoughts are real, then all thoughts are real, and all things that ever can be, will be, manifested in space and time. Which will, no doubt, require multiverses :)

OK, hope that wasnīt *too* weird.
