Re: Las Cruces New Mexico
yeah i know something of it - great weather, so-so job market - somewhat below average wages, cheap housing, nice town, lower than average cost of living, air quality ok, lots of recreation opportunities nearby

I'm not worried about making a lot of money just enough to live. I just want out of the hussle and bussle. CA is too materialistic for me.

Re: Las Cruces New Mexico
I lived there for about 1 month in 1997 ... I was on my way to either San Antonio or Austin, but my older car was overheating and I tried to make a go there. It was very hard to find work, and I signed up with Manpower, a temp agency there, and there is a 10 day waiting period before they place you there.

You might want to be sure to have enough funds to support you for a while. The situation I faced may have changed since I was there, but I didn't have a lot of funds to support me, either. I needed to be in a place where I could get temp work fast at least until I found a permanent job. I ended up moving to Austin after a month there, and never looked back.

It is beautiful there. Some real wild weather blew through there a couple of times I was ther with hail. White Sands missile range is about a 20 minute drive from there.

Thanks Kit Kat. Been there and done that. I'm more thoughtful these days of spur of the moment choices. Lessons learned the hard way so to say. flower

Oh, thank you, too! I have done this several times, actually ... moved to Sedona, AZ from So Cal with just one month's salary saved up ... that worked out okay, though, although I took a huge pay cut. Moved to Phoenix next, and never had a problem finding work, it being a large city.

Moving to Las Cruces was from Phoenix, and that's the only time it did not work out for me, but that wasn't my destination, either ... I feel that one of the reasons it didn't work out was that I wasn't meant to stay there. As soon as I moved to Austin, I had so much temp work, I was turning people down all the time. Turned out to be the best move of my life. flower

Re: Las Cruces New Mexico
One thing I forgot to add: in 1994 I did a cross-country solo driving trip, driving from So Cal through to the east coast up to New York, and then down the east coast and through the gulf coast back to Cali. I had three and one-half weeks' vacation saved up. I had been wanting to move from Cali, and so a portion of the trip was checking out different areas to live.

I had a strange experience staying in a real run-down motel one night of this trip in Deming, NM, and then I was driving east and it was well past dusk. It was pretty dark out. It was around Las Cruces, on I-10, where I was following this semi truck, and there was no other traffic on the road. Out of nowhere, driving at a real fast rate of speed, was this boxy-looking black car (sort of old-fashioned looking) with blacked out windows. I had put on my turn signal just seconds prior to this fast moving vehicle coming up from behind me, and the weird thing about it was that it wasn't using any lights at all. The regular lights and brights flashed on and then off, and then it zoomed around me and vanished in the distance.

It was so weird ... gave me a creepy feeling ... sometimes I wonder if I wasn't seeing an MIB vehicle for the first time. The majority of this trip involved some unusual things happening. Maybe Las Cruces was just not the place for me, and that experience was sort of hinting to me that it wasn't. dance
