I missed this one: Those names that JPL uses sometimes have deeper meaning.
I guess you think they are all just random.

And they are very much not random. There is a very precise system to it. The name C/2012 S1 indicates that it is a non-periodic comet and the first comet to be discovered during the Sept.16-30 2012 period. The "(ISON)" is not part of the name, it just identifies the organisation where it was discovered, the International Scientific Optical Network, which has been around since 2004. ISON was also the system that was used for the discovery of that famous dud, comet C/2010 X1 (Elenin), BTW.
