Anyone just want to sail away?
Just sell up buy a small sailboat and head to sea I guess its always been a dream of mine head south and check out Easter island then Pitcairn before heading to Australia.

Apart from the romance of heading to sea does anyone know
what its realy like? The ocean has always scared me a bit
with storms and such but what about modern day pirates
or other unsavory people?

Is there anyway to make a legal living with small scale
freight or bringing some mechanical skills to a small island?

lots of other questions if anyone has done it like what
about customs and moorage costs, places to avoid etc

It's the move. I have a BIG sailboat. I love to sail around on her. I've got a watermaker. With 50 lbs of rice and 50 lbs of beans, catch some fish, I can go for months. Got all the toys to go with it. Fishing, diving, surfing, windsurfing.

I love to cruise around to exotic places. There are plenty of other people who will pay good money just to go with me, doing what I'd be doing anyway.

It's the life.

Yup. It's not for pussies. You would die.

On the other hand, I've been doing it my whole life, and I'm still here. I've passed more seabouys than you have telephone poles. Stopped counting at 100,000 sea miles.

Like I said, it's not for pussies.

Re: Anyone just want to sail away?
This is what I did years ago. Sold everything. House, car, truck, motorcycle, furniture, everything. Paid cash for a Beneteau Oceanis 510. Moved the fam aboard and took off.

We make our own water and electricity. As long as you anchor out, you can live nearly free. We homeschool the kids and they are three years beyond their peers now.

You can wait tables or whatever. Any regular job as long as you're in the states. If you're in other countries its difficult to work. Better off stocking the boat and fish like your life depends on it.

We have covered the entire Caribbean in the last 3 years. Florida to Trinidad and back. Right now we're getting ready to go again because the states are getting so shitty.

You will want at least a 35 foot ocean worthy boat. No day sailors or coastal boats.
You will need a water maker, wind generator, solar panels, and a wind vain autopilot if you're sailing alone.

The fastest way to learn how to sail is go to your local yacht club and put up a flyer offering yourself as crew. You'll get a call almost immediately.

Take a sailing course and learn to navigate. Get a good chart plotter and all the charts for where you're going. The list is never ending but its doable. There is NO BETTER LIFESTYLE in my opinion. You can live for
Free in the worlds most beautiful settings.

Sailing in the Caribbean is fairly easy. Most land is close by and you can get there in a day or two. If you're heading off into the Pacific then you should be prepared for 30 to 40 day offshore passages.

My wife and I take turn standing watches offshore at night. During the day we are both up so we just keep an eye out. The boat plows along all on its own.

A well found sailboat can weather almost any open ocean storm including hurricanes. But with modern weather forecasting you should never have to encounter anything over 40 knot winds and 30 foot waves which a sailboat can handle no problem.

Be able to work on the boat yourself. You'll save lots of money.

Good luck. Check out cruisers forum for tons of info.
