Been looking long and hard at a 40' Hunter.

If the SHTF this is your best shot of making it imo.

Re: Anyone just want to sail away?
This is what I did years ago. Sold everything. House, car, truck, motorcycle, furniture, everything. Paid cash for a Beneteau Oceanis 510. Moved the fam aboard and took off.

We make our own water and electricity. As long as you anchor out, you can live nearly free. We homeschool the kids and they are three years beyond their peers now.

You can wait tables or whatever. Any regular job as long as you're in the states. If you're in other countries its difficult to work. Better off stocking the boat and fish like your life depends on it.

We have covered the entire Caribbean in the last 3 years. Florida to Trinidad and back. Right now we're getting ready to go again because the states are getting so shitty.

You will want at least a 35 foot ocean worthy boat. No day sailors or coastal boats.
You will need a water maker, wind generator, solar panels, and a wind vain autopilot if you're sailing alone.

The fastest way to learn how to sail is go to your local yacht club and put up a flyer offering yourself as crew. You'll get a call almost immediately.

Take a sailing course and learn to navigate. Get a good chart plotter and all the charts for where you're going. The list is never ending but its doable. There is NO BETTER LIFESTYLE in my opinion. You can live for
Free in the worlds most beautiful settings.

Sailing in the Caribbean is fairly easy. Most land is close by and you can get there in a day or two. If you're heading off into the Pacific then you should be prepared for 30 to 40 day offshore passages.

My wife and I take turn standing watches offshore at night. During the day we are both up so we just keep an eye out. The boat plows along all on its own.

A well found sailboat can weather almost any open ocean storm including hurricanes. But with modern weather forecasting you should never have to encounter anything over 40 knot winds and 30 foot waves which a sailboat can handle no problem.

Be able to work on the boat yourself. You'll save lots of money.

Good luck. Check out cruisers forum for tons of info.

And don't let the naysayers dissuade you. You have a much higher chance of dying on a freeway than sailing an ocean.

Sharks only bite idiots that present themselves as bait, like surfers.

You can catch enough food to eat. You can grow sprouts and other things aboard and store dry food. My family could easily go two years without hitting a grocery store. There's coconuts, mango, lime, breadfruit, bananas, and fish. Don't forget lobster and conch which are easy to get. Crabs too.

When TSHTF there's no safer place to be than anchored next to a secluded little island. The whole planet can go apeshit and you'll be sipping a rum drink eating free lobster.

The grass isn't greener on the other side, unless you live in North Korea or Syria. Those people have an excuse to escape. We don't. My ass is planted right here!

Re: Anyone just want to sail away?
Yes, I did,

When I was done with high-school I sailed away. I spent several years hitching around on various yachts and living a very independent and free life.

You probably wont make any money hauling cargo, mechanical skills are hit or miss. I made money doing bright-work and rigging jobs.

Eventually I got sick of doing this and lost my wanderlust. Good luck.

Dude, you have no idea how close to what I want was a dream..and you actually pulled this off?

I recall dining at a restaurant near the Land Between the Lakes and I was eating with these people who didn't seem to have a care in the world. One of the drunken ones made a poke at me, and I brushed it off....these people are born rich....I don't fit in with that set, but I can tell you they are fun to party with.

There are people with more money than anything and they are indeed living the highlife......These boats must cost a million dollars or more...and they must have regular crew members.

But to talk to rich folks that have that kind of money and means, they are just like anyone else... My girlfriend asked me not to beat one of the boat owners after he made a pass at her...right in front of me..

excellent...

Falling down is a part of life, getting back up is living. ~

Life is about choices, you get to make them each and every day of your life. ~

Capitalization is the difference between helping your Uncle Jack off a horse and helping your uncle jack off a horse.~

Only in America... do we use the word 'politics' to describe the process so well: 'Poloi' in Greek meaning 'many' and 'tics' meaning 'bloodsucking creatures'.~

“When a government is dependent for money upon the bankers, they and not the government leaders control the nation. This is because the hand that gives is above the hand that takes. Financiers are without patriotism and without decency.”

If you're not a liberal at twenty you have no heart, if you're not a conservative at forty you have no brain.
