Re: I HAVE MAGNETIC NORTH AT 43 DEGREES EAST;
I remember last Year March, when we had that big X class CME, they had to reroute airtraffic more to the South, it was very busy up there the whole day long at my latitude.

from that website:

IIB. Geophysical Activity Forecast: The geomagnetic field is expected
to be at quiet to major storm levels on day one (13 Apr), unsettled to
major storm levels on day two (14 Apr) and quiet levels on day three (15
Apr). Protons have a chance of crossing threshold on day one (13 Apr)
and have a slight chance of crossing threshold on days two and three (14
Apr, 15 Apr).

I believe it has something to do with a warning system when the proton flux exeeds a certain treshold. Look also on this diagram.

Explanation under the diagram, has also to do with Ionisation.

Yes that is what I see on my Compas 15 degrees East. On my GPS compas it was showing some 20 degrees West.

GPS Dashboard for Windows Mobile. My Phone is a HTC Touch Cruise with Windows Mobile 6, not so fast and new as todays smart phones but it does what I need it for.

Re: I HAVE MAGNETIC NORTH AT 43 DEGREES EAST;
magnetic north
I was reading about the pole shifting so decided to set up a simple test, i placed my compass on a wooden bench in my garage and set it on magnetic north, 14 days later it is showing that magnetic north is now 5 degrees further east, nothing has been added or taken away which could affect the compass the compass is rectangular in shape and is exactly where it was placed according to the outline traced round it.
Anybody got any ideas whats causing this.

Nope, exactly where it should be.

Yes I did something simulair with my compas on my window bench ( not a real bench just a planck, we call it that way in Dutch, vensterbank)and outlined my compas (a round one), marked North and South and where the needle was pointing. Still after almost a year pointing in the same direction.

Also I understood that magnetic North ( in real south polarity)is moving from Alaska in the direction of Siberia, so to the West not East, this by some 30 miles a year. I see that you live on almost the same latitude as I live here in the Netherlands, 53 degrees North. With a bit of luck and when the sky is clear, we can see the Nothern Lights.

5 degrees is a lot that would be much more than 30 miles.

Re: I HAVE MAGNETIC NORTH AT 43 DEGREES EAST;
Op, I also read about the pole shifting, and I know that it is speeding up, but like I said to the west not east.

According to Wikipedia it moved from 84.9 degrees North, 130.0 degrees West in 2009 to 85.9 degrees north, 147.0 degrees West in 2012 beyond the Canadian Arctic territorial claim.

Re: I HAVE MAGNETIC NORTH AT 43 DEGREES EAST;
Yes, but I think it's not the same as those degrees on the compas. I put those coordinates into Google Earth and then measured the distance, 181 Km. If I calculate with the circuference of the earth it would be some 555.555 Km.

This I think is because the latitude and longitude are starting from the Equator and the Meridian. If you stand on the crossing of these( zero degrees ), the distance over 1 degree is much more then when you are in the north. You can check that for yourself if you put the grid on in Google Earth ( Under the tab view), you can then easely see what I mean.

Re: I HAVE MAGNETIC NORTH AT 43 DEGREES EAST;
Sorry Op, that 555,555 km is for 5 degrees on the compas, from that Wiliam from Alberta. I first thought it was you OP, did'n't see you were quoting. 17 degrees on the compas would be then 1,888.888 Km.

According to Solarham.com the CME still didn't reach us at 21:00 UTC (23:00 here in the Netherlands, Also was lookinh outside but it is still very cloudy. Hope it clears up, so I can see those Northern Lights, would be a first.

Yeah, I only got a difference of about 80 miles at that high latitude. At 89* Latitude, a 15 degree change in Longitude is only about 40 miles. At the equator, a 15 degree Longitude change would be about 1,000 miles.

yes that is correct, I made also a mistake in above example, measured minutes instead of degrees, 1 degree longitude at 53 degrees North latitude is almost 67 Km.
