They're back: 17-year cicadas to swarm the East Coast! | |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 39371129 United States 05/05/2013 04:35 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Billions of Brood II cicadas are set to hatch this spring, bringing a once every 17 years plague to most of the East Coast. The deafening insects will mate and then die over the course of about six weeks, making an unmistakable racket the entire time. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 39371129 But some foodies embrace the insect onslaught, using the high-protein, nutty flavored bugs in all sorts of dishes, from tacos and pizza to cookies and even a martini. [link to www.nydailynews.com] Wow, people eat those things? Some one will eat about anything.I suppose its no more unusual than eating ants, grasshoppers, snails, etc. Seems a lot of stuff like that has good nutrition. |

The cicadas were out all over Washington DC and Maryland in Summer 2004, only 9 years ago. Two different groups with 2 different phases of the 17 year cycle? 2 different cycles, brood 1 = 13 years, brood 2 = 17 years |

Pyractomena borealis User ID: 20793638 United States 05/05/2013 06:53 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Thanks for the info OP! They are one of my favorite insects, and a artistic inspiration for me. Wow, all you entomophobics, the cicada wasp and the cicada are harmless to humans and are very interesting. Some cicadas produce sounds up to 120 dB (SPL),[15] among the loudest of all insect-produced sounds.[16] This is especially notable as their song is technically loud enough to cause permanent hearing loss in humans, should the cicada sing just outside the listener's ear. Conversely, some small species have songs so high in pitch that the noise is inaudible to humans.[6] Species have different mating songs to ensure they attract the appropriate mate. It can be difficult to determine from which direction(s) a cicada song is coming, because the low pitch carries well and because it may, in fact, be coming from many directions at once, as cicadas in various trees may make noise in unison. In addition to the mating song, many species also have a distinct distress call, usually a somewhat broken and erratic sound emitted when an individual is seized. A number of species also have a courtship song, which is often a quieter call and is produced after a female has been drawn by the calling song. You get used to it. Seriously, the gypsy moth catipillar onslaught of '82-'87 was much worse than the cicada swarms of the (roughly) the same years. Cicada just buzz.
