Kids ringing it and then running off. If it rings while standing watching the door, then its likely a faulty connection. This especially holds true if its one of those wireless doorbells. But you guys are probably right... its more likely a ghost, angel or something like that. It makes more sense.

If you have one of those wireless doorbells it could simply be a case of a neighbour having a similar doorbell on the same frequency.
The same thing used to happen to me.

Someone knocked on my front door for three days in a row early in the morning. I got up all three times and went to the door and opened it, but no one was there. That's when I realized that an angel had been letting me know that someone I knew, grew up with, a childhood friend or maybe a distant relative, but someone who possibly knew me wanted me to know they had passed away. That why when you hear door bells ringing or a loud knock on the door it's usually a messenger from the other side trying to let you know that someone has passed away. I never got a phone call, just those loud knocks. Sometimes the family doesn't know how to get in touch with you, and well, stranger things have happened.

It equally as possible that it was a leprechaun trying to alert you of impending financial windfall.

For some time, whenever I carried my cellphone in my shirt pocket, I was sure I felt it vibrating every now and again. Took it out to look each time and... nothing. Just my imagination, it seems.

I had wireless doorbell ringed few times by no one - it was big thick rain drops that caused microswitch to conduct.

I heard knocking on my door a month or so ago, middle of the night. Got up, looked out, put all the outside lights on. Nothing there, and I have no explanation. I never considered that it might be tomato plants.

if you have a wireless portable door bell it could be someone up the street using one too, on the same frequency. Ive had this happen to a couple of friends. whenever someone pressed the neighbors one, theirs would ring.

Yeah, I have had the mysterious knock before too, jolted me out of bed many times a O'dark. No one there. Spirits used to fuck with me until I got on the path they wanted me to be on. Now, they just give me gentle nudges here and there. I don't get all the overt stuff anymore.
