WACO (December 4, 2013) Former West EMS volunteer Bryce Ashley, Reed, who pleaded guilty in October to attempting to obstruct justice and conspiracy to make a destructive device, was sentenced to 21 months in prison Wednesday afternoon.

He must also spend three years on supervised release and was ordered to pay a $2,000 fine and a $200 special assessment to the court.

The charges carry a possible sentence of 25 years.

Reed remains free on bond and will be allowed to report to begin serving the sentence.

He may be able to remain with his family through Christmas, his attorney, Jonathan Sibley said.

Reed and his family are hoping that he’ll serve the sentence at the federal prison facility in Seagoville, Sibley said.

Reed and family members prayed in the parking lot before entering the federal building in downtown Waco.

He said he wanted people to know that he loves his community and would never do anything to harm it.

The former West paramedic, who was accused of possessing bomb-making material in the aftermath of the deadly April fertilizer plant explosion, was originally indicted on May 14 by a federal grand jury in Waco for possession of a destructive device, but later agreed to a plea deal with prosecutors.

Sibley said Reed decided to enter the guilty plea because he wanted to accept full responsibility "for what he believes is his role in the allegations against him" and to spare family and friends from what Sibley said would likely have been "a hotly contested and long and drawn out jury trial."

Reed, who was released to the custody of his mother and stepfather on Aug. 22, was never linked to the April 17 explosion that killed 15, injured hundreds and damaged or destroyed dozens of homes and buildings.

Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives agents arrested him on May 9 in West after pipe bomb components were found on May 7 at the home of an Abbott resident who “had unwittingly taken possession of the components from Reed on April 26,” an arrest warrant affidavit said.

Update at 3:10 p.m.:

Former West paramedic Bryce Reed was sentenced to 21 months in federal prison Wednesday.

Reed faced a maximum of 25 years in prison, but U.S. District Judge Walter S. Smith agreed to reduce the terms because the pipe bomb materials weren’t actually assembled into a destructive device. That lowered the sentencing range to 15 to 21 months, and the judge opted for the maximum of that range — 21 months for each count, to be served concurrently.

Afterward, Reed said he thought the sentencing was “fair.” He faced up to 25 years in prison.

Jonathan Sibley, Reed’s attorney, said the pipe bomb materials were ordered online to make a homemade firework for entertainment. He said it wasn’t intended to harm anyone or any property.

“This is just a case of a couple guys who live out in the country who had no idea what they were getting into,” Sibley said.

During a lengthy and emotional speech in the courtroom, Reed adamanetly denied any involvement in April’s fertilizer plant explosion and apologized to the town of West for causing any pain. He said he became emotionally unstable following the explosion, in which he lost a first responder who he said was a close friend.

“I completely broke down,” he said.

“I am so very sorry for the actions that followed, the community I affected and the department I failed.”

Original post at 7 a.m.: Editor’s note: This item has been updated to correct the maximum sentence Reed faces.

The former West paramedic who pleaded guilty to conspiring to make a destructive device and attempting to obstruct justice will be sentenced Wednesday in federal court.

Bryce Ashley Reed, 31, was arrested in May after authorities say he gave an unwitting friend a box that held materials for a pipe bomb roughly the size of a permanent marker. He was originally charged with possessing a destructive device, but pleaded guilty in October to the two lesser felony charges.

Reed faces up to 25 years in prison — up to five years in for conspiracy to make a destructive device and up to 20 years for attempting to obstruct justice.

Reed’s arrest came shortly after the fertilizer plant explosion in West that killed 15 people and just before investigators announced that arson was still a possible cause of the fire, fueling speculation that Reed was involved in the blast.

Reed remained in jail for several months as officials were mum as to whether the pipe bomb charge was related to the explosion. But Reed has not been charged for causing the blast, and the McLennan County district attorney told The Waco Tribune-Herald there is no evidence linking Reed to the explosion.

Reed, his family and his lawyer have adamantly denied his involvement in the explosion.

U.S. District Judge Walter S. Smith is expected to sentence Reed at 1 p.m. Wednesday in a Waco federal court.

Cell phones and other electronics aren’t allowed in federal court, but I will tweet the results as soon as possible.

I don't think there's anything sinister or shady about Bryce. I think he was framed to deflect attention from what really happened w/ that explosion. Remember the connection to Monsanto & the video that people claimed showed a missile?
