Lawyer: English-only is "discriminatory."
DENVER (CBS4)- A group of Hispanic custodians at the Auraria Campus in downtown Denver are claiming they are victims of discrimination.

They’ve filed a complaint against the campus operator that could be reviewed by a federal judge.

What started out as a miscommunication over a schedule change for employees working the graveyard shift has become a full investigation by the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.

“Too many things have happened to me there that I don’t even know how to explain it,” said Auraria custodian Bertha Ribota.

I think it's discriminatory that I wasn't hired as a trauma surgeon because I didn't do a small thing like go to medical school. I demand a handout.

Did I do it right?

I believe language is important. I can speak more than two myself. But if you move to Russia -- you should learn to read, write, and speak in Russian; if you move to Japan-- you shoud learn to read, write, and talk in Japanese. I would ask this lady and her brilliant lawyer if they think Mexico would change their language laws for those who can't speak or read Spanish.

WTF happened to Colorado? Mental patients being elected into office. I can't believe Tancredo was ever elected in this state. Not that I was {or am} his biggest fan, but things like this is what turned him into the man he is.

Yes Americans need to remember since they are under English rule they need to speak English. Their English lords and masters demand it.

So what exactly does that have to do with the current regime running the show???

My point about Tancredo is very simple. I made the remark that I could not believe he was ever elected to public office anywhere in Colorado when a large portion of the state's population seems to support lawsuits like this -- including amnesty.

This should be expected when you think back over the last decade or so how some of the major stores and grocers and company's have/list everything in their stores/company in both English and spanish. Walmart was the first that comes to my mind.

So........when this country decided it was bi-lingual I knew trouble would soon be down the road.

You can totally expect this (if it goes to a judge) will definitely rule in favor of the employee.

I mean, what the fuck is wrong with all you American's (that would be me too) that you can't speak two languages! (sarcasm)

This is a harbinger of the over turn of this country to one hispanic united north America's.

And that would mean you too native american's....get with the program and realize that your native language is about to be pre-empted by spanish. (sarcasm)

Re: Lawyer: English-only is "discriminatory."
Its funny how there are a multitude of languages spoken in the united states (over 30 not including subdialects)and it always seems to be one dialect in particular screaming for attention wanting everyone to speak "spanish".

While there may not be an official language for the federal government written in paper, the majority of the states have statues, amendments, etc. which make their state language officially English. Look it up.

Pathetic. It's too bad that it's now too late to fire these people, because they would say it was retaliation for the suit they filed.

Shoulda fired them when they started making safety or other mistakes. Not that cause is needed, but that would surely have been good cause, enough to overcome a discrimination suit.

Hmm, hiring them was a mistake, but it could be argued that they were negligent based on their inability or unwillingness to learn the state language.
