$3.05 for unleaded regular & $3.25 for premium tonight...
...while the plucking oil companies reap unparalled profits.

thwak

This snip from a friend:

Concurrently, individual Americans are increasingly fretting about whether the US budget deficit, current account deficit, low saving rates, high levels of household debt, soaring oil prices, rising interest rates and slowing earnings growth will converge to undermine the US economy.

A boom in assets, rising profits, favourable treatment by market-friendly governments, and improved productivity have allowed the wealthy to prosper at the expense of the working class.

Clearly class not race will emerge as the great divider.

Rich versus poor.

Three examples can be highlighted:

1. Defense: Increase in defense spending. Iraq war & Vice President Dick Cheney. Dick Cheney claimed to have stepped down from Haliburton but continues to receive millions from them and award them no-bid contracts in Iraq and New Orleans.

2. Oil: Increase in fuel prices. Exxon Mobil Corp. posted record profits. $10.71 billion for the fourth quarter and $36.13 billion for 2005 as the world's biggest publicly traded oil company benefited from high oil and natural-gas prices and solid demand for refined products. A $69.7 million compensation package and $98 million pension payout to Exxon Mobil Corp.'s former chief executive and chairman Lee R. Raymond.

3. Pharmaceuticals: Increase in prescriptions. Donald Rumsfeld, former chairmen of the Gilead Corporation were the creators of Tamiflu. He holds significant shares in the company. As the bird flu scare increases, Tamiflu stands to pull in record amounts of cash and now deals are bing worked out between a multitude of companies wanting to manufacture Tamiflu.

Bush-Cheney-Rumsfeld are modern day Prince John and the Sherrif of Nottingham. They steal from the poor to give to the rich. The Generals are a modern day Sixpack of Robin Hoods sporting a Six Gun.

Greed versus Honor.

Yes I know about all these other countries and what they pay and ya know what you guys seem to handle it okay.

If you have ever lived in the USA.... as a kid I remmeber singing the anthem and believing that we stood for something great and good... but I digress

Everything is spaced out and you can't ride a bike to work. Many people commute for an hour or more just to work. This rise in price with no end in sight and no explanation as the oil companies rake in record profits quarter after quarter is getting us pissed off!

Gypsy, I don't know much about the set up you have in Australia.

Do you pay for medical insurance, college, etc., as we do?

What do you get for your $6 a gallon other than gas?

I'm going to bed, p.o.'ed in the knowledge that we'll probably be paying over 4 bucks a gallon come summer...grrrrr....

If anyone can remember which gas stations are owned by Venezuela, please post it here.

It'll be worth the trip to find a relatively local service station because I'm NOT going to buy from Exxon, Mobil, or any other big US company.

well polly tell your tree hugging buddies to let em drill in Anwar, open up wells the green goons have forced closed throughout the country this past 20 years.

Oh and better hope that crazy son of a gun in Iran doesn't decide to sink afew ships in the Straight of Hormoos.... would pretty much plug off most of the worlds oil.

Oil companys make .10 per gallon of fuel.. guess where the other part of the 3.25 per gallon goes? The tax and spenders in DC and your state... prove me wrong I DARE you.

Wait till Bush goes to war against Iraq. Then it's going to be $9 a gallon.

I know there's 3.7854 litres to a US gallon, but what's the current exchange rate for converting US dollars to Australian? Anyone?

Here's a link to the average price for unleaded in Shell stations in Sydney NSW Australia: [link to www.shell.com.au]

AUD$1.29 per litre right now. So that's AUD$4.88 per US gallon. Just remains to be seen what AUD$4.88 is in US dollars.

Yup on both counts.

NO personal service in most places -
we pump the petrol, check tyres, wash windscreens ourselves in the majority of 'service' stations.

As to apples and oranges 74140 I imagine you are referring to wages and distances. Check Oz for both!

Ashchaya - yes, Sydney prices are 'cheaper'... I'm in the back blocks of Oz and petrol tankers have to travel great distances to our stations.... freight charges make EVERYTHING so much more expensive.

Ah, the price we pay for living in Paradise.

Gypsy - I too am rural, but I just use the Sydney prices as a guide. I can easily add 10-15c to that for the price I know my wife will have to pay to fill her petrol powered shitbox.

The price we pay indeed mate :)

Gypsy - Yep. I like the point the article makes about people who are just waiting it out and hoping for it to go back to "normal". It will never go down. I think it'll really open people's eyes when it hits the $2/L mark. That's a real psychological milestone too.

I buy only 93 and 94 Octane (my car is turbocharged..), $2.85-2.89 a gallon here in South Jersey and I get around 20mpg. I can still afford it, but if it gets to a certain point I'll have to sell my car and get an econobox...or maybe a motorcycle

Hey, waitaminute!

I thought the whole purpose of our going to Iraq was to get more oil and that's why the protesters were all screaming about no blood for oil...so what happened to the cheap oil?
