Jet engine rumblings in Clearwater
Tonight at 11:45 in east Clearwater I started hearing loud rumbling sounds coming from the south. Went on about 10-12 minutes and was like a jumbo jet that didn't take off. Anyone have insight as to what it was/is? Should we be worried??

Re: Jet engine rumblings in Clearwater
I live in Tampa, FL, way west Hillsborough, almost near the Oldsmar Flea market.

Starting at 10:00 to 10:20ish, there was a series of weird dramatic drum-like 'beats' pusling in the distance along with waning natural thunder. After hearing this "thunder" pulsing at such a regular interval, we went outside to look around. It sounded like it was coming from the West, a little bit South West. This would have been your direction. What's weirder is it culminated in a series of rapid-fire beats, accompanied by horizon-level flashes, like a big bug zapper or something. We went back inside, because everything ceased after that.

Around 11:45 PM or so, we heard the jet rumbling noises. We have heard these weird mysterious jets enough to take note of them as an unusual, though recurring phenomenon. They sound enormous, and overbearing. They do sound like giant commercial jet flyovers, except that they never "go" anywhere, and they just quickly "turn on" and "turn off" as those somebody quickly spun an analogue volume dial to bring them in and out of existence. This time it started pretty steady, and gradually got louder for like what felt like 7 or 8 minutes. It quickly shut off, then came back on. We went out back again. The jet noises were coming from your area again, the exact same spot on the horizon as where the beats and flashing had been earlier. The noises then died off again. Immediately, they returned, stayed constant for a final one minute interval, then off for good. (So far, as of 1:06 AM) No lights or anything this tme.

Tonight when these phenomenon occured, there was no wind. Mildly overcast atmosphere, but you COULD see some stars. At 12:36 AM I checked weather.com and intellicast and the radars looked clear for the rest of the night, although it HAD rained earlier when I was running errands in Clearwater on US 19.

Should we be worried? I don't know. It's definitely an incredibly creepy situation that most people reading this will not appreciate unless they have experienced it themselves. It's not a cargo plane landing, it's not thunder, it's not helicopters, it's not a train, it's not trucks idling, it's not wind. It's "other." The perceived scale of the sounds, or whatever their presumed source may be sure seems so huge that it's scary.

North GA here. I have heard the same rumblings many times before the source has evaded me thus far. I have heard it go on from 12am to 6AM fadng and then the volume rising. It has gotten loud enough that I heard it inside my home and yet none of my neighbors to my knowledge has noticed it...

Its so common for me to hear it while out stargazing in the dead of night that it doesnt even startle me anymore I just want to know WTF it is.

Also, I noticed you mentioned that conditions are overcast while hearing it. I usually hear it on cloudy or rainy nights.

We used to live in Austin, barely half a mile from the base. What you are describing reminds me of what it sounded like when they would regularly warm up the B52's. They wouldn't take off, just warm and rev the engines.

It rattled the house, deafening noise.

Re: Jet engine rumblings in Clearwater
used to have exactly that noise coming from an Air Base near here a couple of years ago

was told by someone who used to work there it was the base checking the engines on the large planes there

any bases nearby?

quarter to twelve at night is a bit odd though

Southern Clearwater.......I'd think that with overcast skies you could get weird noises from Tampa Int'l or MacDill AF base?! Not to mention the insane Tampa Bay thunderstorms and the crazy sounds they can make.

That's what I get for sleeping with headphones on. I never hear anything.
SPEAK UP. SILENCE IS DEADLY!

I am currently experiencing life at several WTFs per hour.
