House Republicans Pass Bill To End Overtime Pay
In a shocking new salvo in their war on workers, House Republicans have passed a bill that repeals mandatory overtime pay.

Yes, you read that right. House Republicans have decided that hourly workers have it too cushy when they receive extra money for working extended hours. So, this week they passed the so-called "Working Families Flexibility Act," which gives business owners the flexibility of not paying hourly workers a higher hourly rate for overtime work.

Doing that would take money out of the pockets of every full-time hourly employee in the country, and put that same money in pockets of business owners.

Re: House Republicans Pass Bill To End Overtime Pay
whats funny about this is there are already a lot of smaller business owners who don't pay overtime (yes, that is illegal..but) A place I used work for is independently owned and they couldn't afford to pay overtime, so if anyone accrued it they just saved it up and applied those hours to your next check. (again, it IS illegal, but oh well)

But the big companies, who actually can afford to pay overtime will probably be overjoyed to learn that they can just keep that money.

I'm hoping this isn't true. what a rip.

its not,, you bank up hours to be used later or paid later. they are not screwing someone out of anything , it lets employees and employers more flexability for vacations, sick leave ect.

but do you still get time-and-a-half for overtime? I think that's the issue. The place I was talking about applied the hours later but didn't pay you overtime pay.

(as in, you worked more than forty hours a week and still only got paid for the forty hours until it could be tacked on later, but at the regular rate instead of the time-and-a-half you're supposed to get for overtime)

The bill gives employers the choice of giving you "comp-time" INSTEAD of time and a half pay.
It basically ends time and a half pay for overtime work.

How can you possibly not get paid for work you actually did, just because you did "too much" to get paid for? That sounds like when cell phone companies use "rollover minutes". That is totally rediculous. This is exactly why people formed unions back in the day.

Re: House Republicans Pass Bill To End Overtime Pay
Many ppl are surviving on their overtime. It's how they barely make it work now. A bill like this, if embraced by employers, will literally put ppl out of their homes and onto the system.

Lets remember that before we start calling all these ppl lazy
and moochers. Just like the recession in 2009 they have no choice but to ask for assistance.

Also, as much as some employers wish this would motivate their employees to work harder to keep their jobs it usually does the exact opposite and their turnover starts to sky rocket.

What a mess.

You dumbass! The bill that was past would allow the EMPLOYEE to swap (If they chose too) their overtime pay for days off. For every hour they worked they could chose to take 1 1/2 hours off work. Benifits the employee NOT the employer! Typical libtard spin!!!

Anyone with a real job is salaried. Most people milk the overtime system, its just like government cheese.

In any event, the new wave of immigrants coming to America won't want overtime anyway. They will gladly do the blue collar jobs for a fraction of what's paid now. What will all the cops and lazy government/state/town employees do when they can't milk the system anymore???

Lol, sucks to be blue collar.

Unless the article is misworded, it says it gives employees the option to bank those hours for later use instead of getting overtime pay now

I'm salaried, so it doesn't matter if I work 40 hours per week or 60 hours. Although my employer allows us salaried employees to bank comp hours if we do work more than 45 hours in one week (or if we have to work nights or weekends for emergencies)

I personally like the ability to bank additional time off. It gives me another 2-3 weeks per year of vacation time most years.

The money made by time and a half OT pay has some of our hourly workers taking home a fraction of that money because it usually bumps them up several tax brackets for that pay period
