Shell and BP UK offices raided in probe into petrol price fixing
BP and Shell are being investigated over allegations that they have fixed petrol prices for more than a decade.
European Commission investigators raided the offices of several major oil companies yesterday as they launched a far-reaching probe into price manipulation. They fear prices have been driven up at the pumps for millions of motorists. The AA responded to news of the swoop by declaring: ‘The lid is about to be blown off.’

Norwegian state oil firm Statoil is also under investigation. It said that ‘suspected violations may have been going on since 2002’. The probe relates to the process used by price reporting agency Platts, which publishes prices for crude oil, petroleum products and financial instruments linked to oil. Platts’ so-called Market On Close (MOC) method works by asking oil traders – some of whom work for major firms such as BP and Shell – to submit the prices they pay to buy and sell oil and other products.

Listened to a spokesman for petrol users campaign group, who said the corruption involved market traders and others, and this would be bigger than the LIBOR scandal.

Just looking at the price quoted for what the UK pays for gas. £1.33 a litre equals $10.10 a gallon. Is that higher than the US?

$10.10??? At most I would think it is in the $4.00 range in some places here in America, but it is in the $3 range in most states.

When will people understand the whole fucking lot is rigged.
When you base the price on a stock traded futures contract, it will always be open to manipulation.
The oil companies themselves enter the market bidding up futures contracts in order to manipulate prices at the pump.
Either that or they reduce or increase supply in order to fluctuate prices.

Energy prices are the same.
The stock market is rigged from top to bottom, and its the price of futures they use to base the price they sell a barrel of oil for.
Its a joke.

Its just a way of appeasing the public.
Anyone questions it, they say "Look we're having an investigation and can't comment so as not to prejudice the outcome".

Then a year down the line they reduce prices at the pump, big up the enquiry and take credit for driving down prices, everyone will be happy for a few months, but all the while they will creep prices back up slowly when the shits blown over.

Its all smoke and mirrors, and the sheeple fall for it every time.

Wrong - that's $10.30 a gallon

1 gallon = 5 litres
£1 = $1.53
£1.35 = $2.06
$2.06 x 5 = $10.30

really

it's the 1st time i've seen oil companies being raided and publicly investigated for their shifty dealings

and i do feel that the ebbing complacency of the public cannot or should not be relied on
i feel that the public are wearing thin of this 'fat cat creaming more profits from the poor' litany

and with the tories currently being sliced in two by the europe issue ,i think cameron may see this as a chance to build his cred and 'do right by the working man'
in fact i'd probably recommend this ( if he asked ;-)

thats' just my feeling - whether he's got the balls to do more than posture is yet to be seen- i'm not holding my breath though
