From the site we use (a car-park by the side of a reservoir), there's a farm on a hill opposite with a security light. I've used that light a couple of times to check the scope's alignment after the car drive up there - using the same method in the video above. And during the day, I've even used the sun, reflected in a ball-bearing positioned at the bottom of my garden. Any tiny point of light will give the same effect when slightly out of focus - and the effect is routinely used by telescope owners for checking and aligning optics.
