I've always wondered why a town didn't just turn on this group and just "escort" them out of their city. Non violently of course, but a few pitchforks and torches wouldn't hurt.

Inconclusive whether "the church" even showed up

They have, sort of. They (the church) were going to protest a few military funerals, several years ago. The American Legion has an organization of motorcyclists called the Legion Riders. The Rider's, along with other biker groups have blocked the "church's" entrance to funerals and kept them (church members) from being seen by the families at others.

There is a surprising lack of reliable links to confirm it but according to all the people there, it happened.

The story is they tried to get a permit to picket but got denied because in Oklahoma, you can't protest within 1000 feet within the two hours before and after a funeral. They ignored he law and protested, and were promptly arrested before they could even get started. And a good thing too because bail bondsmen were saying they would help anyone arrested for assaulting the westboro freaks.

They won't be arraigned until after the holiday weekend so I'm sure they're going to have an interesting next few days. I hope they get put into the general population - is that mean of me?

So people are getting arrested for exercising their first amendment rights and GLP is celebrating? Scary.

Regardless of how wicked or filthy their message is, they have every right to speak without fear of being arrested.

if they have more than a couple of people protesting...they need to get clearance from the city or state just like everyone else.

They didn't have a permit and they were within 1000 feet of a child's funeral, which is against Oklahoma laws. No leg to stand on if they sue this time. If this is true, I will scream with joy.

If this story is true, that is surprising. Most of the Westboro leaders are Lawyers and usually are very careful about having the required permits.

They most often make sure they comply with the local laws and then taunt other people to break the law. Their tactic is to push people's buttons and try to get somebody to cross the line and then they will try to file a lawsuit either against an individual or a city for not providing adequate protection or whatever else they can find to sue for.

It may have been Westboro, but I'm skeptical. And usually, the really high profile events where there are large numbers of counter protestors, they usually turn out to be no-shows.

Their church is about an hour's drive from where I live. I am often tempted to drive up there one night and set it on fire.

Yeah, I was thinking more "We don't want you here and we're going to make sure you aren't in our town by kicking your butts out of it." and less protective. I remember seeing the Legion Riders and another group that does that. They were always supported by the community, a local bar even did a special where they got beer for like a quarter or free for the hour after the funeral if they were there (think they got a token or something...not sure how it worked).

My point is that it is a prime example of our patience as a society that we allow them to push so far, and have not pushed back except to defend the areas being attacked by putting people in the way to block the view. And I'll admit that it is the right thing to do even though my emotions tell me to round up a posse and drive them out of the state and to tell them to stay out. Would need a big door though to make the point...

I'm sure in some parts of the world the lot of them would have "disappeared" by now.

I would be tempted too if I lived that close, but they are definitely not worth it....besides, they are imploding from within anyway. Lots if in-fighting going in inside the group. As soon as the old man kicks the bucket, they will finish falling apart, and that will be one less group of crazies we have to worry about...at least till some other group of crazies takes their place.

Sounds like they got "good ol' boy'd" for anyone who has ever lived in the rural states.

They may have actually saved them from something much worse.

We do have a state law in oklahoma that prevents protesting 2 hours before a funeral and requires a distance of 1000 feet be kept by the protesters. It was aimed at WBC.
If they came they would be arrested.

They should really model themselves after the Ku Klux Klan or The Nazi Party of America as far as worthless hate groups go, at least they don't put their own children in danger or create hazardous situations.

Westboro Baptists Church group is actually just a group of DEMOCRAT LAWYERS, who bought an old church. They didn't change the name of the church, but use it as an excuse to make people mad so that they can sue when people attack them back.

The head guy once ran for office as a democrat and was a big supporter for Al Gore.

Everything about them is made up. Their purpose it to get conservatives and religious people blamed for their actions.

Funny thing about that 1st amendment that people selectively forget... the freedom of speech and freedom to protest are superseded by a clause noting of proper "time, place, and manner."

The Westboro fucktards only want attention... and it's exactly what they are getting thanks to the MSM.

I live in Moore, Oklahoma and we were all ready for WBC to show up.

Vice did a mini documentary about them that was fascinating. You should watch it, especially if you claim to be a "Christian"... Once you understand their reasons for protesting soldiers funerals, you'll realize that their position is not so crazy after all.

Also, Fred Phelps was a civil rights lawyer at one time, which blows my mind. Now, a woman from his own congregations thinks he may have had a homosexual encounter when he was in the military, which could explain why he will never shut up about men having sex with other men.

I'm all for freedom of speech, they should be allowed to say what ever they want.

What I disagree with is them being given any level of protection.

If you go into a very dangerous neighborhood and start screaming racial slurs and insulting people, you won't walk out of there. Same should go for WBC, or I should be given police escort to go to the east side of town and start screaming racial slurs.

Hiding behind laws to attack people is the most shameful thing I can think of.

I think protesting a private funeral is the exact same thing as harassment, which is a crime.
They also have a history of using their own children as buffers against violence, they're smart, but the break laws.

And they're downright despicable.
