Raw Food Diet for Dogs (Golden Retriever)
I have a new golden retriever puppy who's three & 1/2 months old. We just took him to a holistic vet who's suggested that we consider putting him on a raw food diet, especially considering that goldens are prone to cancer. My brother had a lovely golden that they had to have put to sleep at the age of 3yrs. because of cancer in his jaw. We got the book: "Natural Nutrition for Dogs and Cats" by Kymythy Schultze to learn more about the diet. Anyways, I was wondering if any of you had experience with putting your dog on a raw food diet?

Re: Raw Food Diet for Dogs (Golden Retriever)
i use it but not on that breed so not sure if its even wise. i use it on my dobermans cause of their narrow stomachs easier for them.

for fighting cancer i would suggest certain vitamins/minerals not just raw

oh and this diet is expensive to maintain you cant go back once begun or they will be sick

Of course my dogs have a raw food diet. They only eat cats, rats, and the occasional coatimundi. (Kind of like a raccoon)

They have to chase down their prey, keeps them in shape. You have to make sure they eat the guts and all.

When they're good and hungry, they eat the whole cat every time.

Raw chicken breast with bone and rice. Loves raw veggies also. Dogs can have raw chicken bones but never cooked ones.

Re: Raw Food Diet for Dogs (Golden Retriever)
Our 4 year old Aussie has been on one for over a year now. She didn't adjust too well at first. But a local farmer suggested we feed her organic pumpkin and nothing else until her stomach eased down. As soon as it did (maybe 2-3 days) we slowly introduced her to it again, and she made a perfect transition. She now eats only lamb, chicken, beef, fish, and mixture of vegetables such as carrots, greens, etc.

She's very, very healthy and the vet has been impressed with both her look and her energy since being on a raw diet. And it was something originally he suggested we not do.
"Who shall I send, and who will go for us?' And I replied, 'Here am I. Send me..." For I have not given up on my country, so may my country not give up on me. semper fucking fi.

When I raised terriers, I gave them raw a couple of times a week but not every day.

They were never sick not even going back and forth.

Also didn't have any fleas either which I think is also from the raw diet.

Mostly chicken "quarters" which is a leg with thigh attached as they were often on sale and I'd get 100# and freeze them.

I wouldn't give a puppy bones until he can chew them better and also NEVER cooked ones. Or ones sawed by a butcher with points like T bones or pork chops. Just whole, intact bones.

But it always worked great for me and my dogs were incredibly healthy and happy.

Oh yeah, like you'd understand anyway.

Where are we going and why am I in this handbasket?. . .J. Handy

My dog had cancer when he was a pup. We did Chemo and he was ok, but they said he porbably wouldn't live to his full expectancy. We fed him chicken soup every day, and he lived until 14. We just cooked up the chicken soup and added in carrots and celery, and poured it over his kibble. I believe it worked. Of course no onion and just the tiniest pinch of salt for the whole pot.

Re: Raw Food Diet for Dogs (Golden Retriever)
Both of my German Shepherds are on a raw diet. Both are in excellent health, have no stomach issues, high energy and look fabulous. We feed primarily beef and add boiled eggs (shell and all), fish oil and vitamin supplements to the mixture. If you don;t want to mix your own, Bravo has a fabulous raw diet that is available at most organic or high end pet stores. The Bravo diet is the next best thing to mixing your own and we do use it when we can't find a good deal on meat.

I don't think that there would be a problem going off the raw diet and back onto kibble other than the fact that you are introducing "crap" back into their system and it WILL cause stomach problems, yeast and bacterial infections, bladder issues, etc. ALL of which are issues when you feed a commercially prepared dog kibble anyway.

The health benefits to your dog FAR out weigh the time and cost involved. For anyone NOT feeding raw, I highly recommend it. It's easier on their system, there is MUCH less waste and the dogs no longer have that "doggie odor".

Re: Raw Food Diet for Dogs (Golden Retriever)
I have a Maltese/Bichon mix.... she's 6 years old, and for years, she suffered with ear infections, paw licking/chewing and bladder infections. Tried every food the Vet recommended, and even Origen didn't work.

Finally, we had enough and switched her to a raw diet. Twice a day feeding of raw beef (95%), a little spinach or pumpkin (5%), with olive oil or EFA (2%) drizzled on top. Organ meats once a week and bones. Raw carrots and apples for treats (3%) An occasional egg. Within two weeks, the ears cleared up, she stopped licking/chewing and she's more active now then ever. AND, she only poops once a day - because she's not having to get rid of all the fillers and grains.

Offering your pet as close to a diet that they would be eating in their natural habitat is definitely the best choice if you care for your pet's health and longevity.
