Theravada was the first Buddhist tradition I encountered. A friend of mine returned to the UK after a few years spent teaching English in Thailand and gave me a book written by Ajahn Chah. (Forest tradition.) As a disillusioned teen-age Westerner the teachings were like nectar to me and it led me to examine other traditions such as Mahayana, Mahamudra and Zen. It's a joy to me to discuss the path to enlightenment with others and also to learn different cultural perspectives. I rarely discuss with family (Catholic.) so there you have a good start because it is a part of your family tradition. You mentioned that you feel different from other people around you, well perhaps that is a good thing. Do you really want to be like other people? <smiles> Wishing you much peace Quoting: JellyVision around me, there are few people following buddhism especially Theravada, i hardly to share my thoughts with my friends. there was a time i feel lonely bcuz i couldnt fall in line with classmte bcuz they were rude to their close friends like calling their friend "DOGS", i couldnt accept, bcuz i know the unbelievable power of our words, they will exist in universe forever (maybe the next incarnation they may be dogs). i'm always serious so i dont have many friends. and now, i go to the uni, i think i may change, i lost my way, i wonder many things. and now i try to find a school there are people like me.
