Brazil achieved oil self sufficiency.
Finally! We are free from the rule of the oil exporters. Our economy now can grow with a solid base and we can even join OPEC.

With your massive debt you can be slaves to the international bankers, and you can't join OPEC unless you are a major exporter.

Archangel has a point there.

And Brazil is not self-sufficient in regards to all petrochemicals, since its proportion of light oil is low.

And the president with dirty hands... that was lame.

The major ethanol and methanol production plants in Brazil are already being bought by foreign capital, since the country has none.

That is not correct. Our only dependency on foreign oil is due to fuel demands.

I work for the brazilian government, pretty lady. The ARE being bought. Brazilian entrepreneurs are either not prepared, low on capital or don´t give a damn about strategic resources and yes they will sell their assets to foreigners if confronted with large sums of cash.

Our alcohol plants evolved from sugar production plants back in our colonial period. This is a well stabilished industry in our country.

Re: Brazil achieved oil self sufficiency.
I´m just sick and tired of this nationalistic bullshit everytime something potentially good happens to Brazil... the point is nothing ever happens in the follow-up. Yes we are owned, that´s the sad truth.

We have ridiculous growth rates, barely higher than Haiti´s and that in a context of high global liquidity. The eternal "country of the future", a future that never comes.

If we are more efficient in ethanol production, we´re gonna sell it and it will never become any kind of richness to our country. It never does.

"I work for the brazilian government, pretty lady."

Me too.

"The ARE being bought."

I interpret that as more investments in solid areas of economy instead of the volatile financial market characteristic of our previous government.

"Brazilian entrepreneurs are either not prepared, low on capital or don´t give a damn about strategic resources and yes they will sell their assets to foreigners if confronted with large sums of cash."

This never took place. Ok, Furnas has been sold to the private sector, but our government will never allow a prevailing foreign ownership.

Idol,

I was not referring to state-owned companies. I loathe the previous government, trust me. That was a crime in itself.

I referred to private firms. Ethanol technology is also held by private individuals and those were the object of my criticism.

That is false, we have partners now.

We have realistic growth rates.

We are building ethanol plants here in the states, however we can't compete with Brazil. You get about 8 times the yield for Brazilian sugar cane, compared to American corn in the manufacture of ethanol

"Brazilian police 'execute thousands'
By Angus Stickler
BBC News, Rio de Janeiro

Policeman on the streets of Rio
Rio's police are heavily armed in many areas of the city
Hundreds, possibly thousands of people are shot by police every year in Brazil, a BBC investigation has found.

The authorities say it is mainly criminals caught in military-style raids on drug gangs but according to a former senior official, new evidence suggests that many of the shootings are cold-blooded executions conducted by the police. "
